When groups feature in political philosophy, it is usually in one of three contexts: the redressing of past or current injustices suffered by ethnic or cultural minorities; the nature and scope of group rights; and questions around how institutions are supposed to treat a certain specific identity/cultural/ethnic group. What is missing from these debates is a comprehensive analysis of groups as both agents and objects of social policies. While this has been subject to much scrutiny by sociologists and social psychologists, it has received less attention from a normative and philosophical point of view. This volume asks: what problems are posed to political philosophy by a collection of individuals who act or are treated in a collective way? Focusing not only on ways in which institutions should treat groups, but also on the normative implications of considering groups as possible social agents, when acting either in vertical relations with the state or in horizontal relations with other groups (or individuals), this book explores these issues from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Contributors address both the nature of political and social philosophy itself, and the ways in which specific issues – affirmative action, race, religion and places of worship, the rights of states – have become political and social priorities.

Justice, dignité, abolitions, indemnités, mémoire, droits, race, responsabilité… Cet ouvrage entend éclaircir les sens et les enjeux d’une constellation de termes associés aux réparations au titre de l’esclavage. Chaque définition propose une mise en situation passée et présente des mots, à la lumière des sciences humaines et sociales : à chaque notion est associée une question au cœur des débats contemporains. La question des réparations est ainsi replacée au centre de préoccupations philosophiques, juridiques, politiques, économiques et historiques, inscrites dans une réflexion globale et de longue durée sur la domination. Ce lexique a pour objectif principal d’expliquer à un grand public les enjeux des revendications de réparations, au-delà des polémiques et des conflits politiques. Ce livre est issu d’un travail collectif mené par des anthropologues, historiens, juristes, philosophes, politistes, au sein du programme financé par l’Agence nationale de la recherche, et intitulé REPAIRS, « Réparations, compensations et indemnités au titre de l’esclavage (Europe-Amériques-Afrique) (xixe-xxie siècles) ».

La race n''est-elle qu’une chimère — une fiction collective aux effets pernicieux — ou est-elle un concept nécessaire à l’analyse et à l’éradication éventuelle du racisme et de ses conséquences ? Cette catégorie ambiguë relève-t-elle de la biologie ou bien renvoie-t-elle à une réalité de nature socio-politique ? Le racisme est-il d’abord un attribut des individus ou des institutions — un état mental fait de croyances et d’affects ou un système social ? Toute discrimination raciale est-elle inévitablement raciste ? Est-elle immorale et injuste même dans les cas où elle ne serait pas entièrement irrationnelle ?
