This book is testimony to the emergent nature of human security as an idea, as a useful construct and as an operational strategy. The aim is to showcase new directions that may enrich the human security agenda. Some human security discourse is still rooted in the traditional language of the aid-agency/UN development/economic growth models, often hostile to the corporate and business sector, and sometimes negligent of sustainability and climate change issues. Another limited and outmoded approach is an exaggerated focus on Western interventions, especially military ones, as a "solution" to problems in poor or conflict-prone areas. "Human Security" was introduced as a construct by the UNDP in 1994. The inherent combination of law-enforcement and people-centred humanitarianism has strived to provide an umbrella to both protect people from threats while empowering them to control their destinies. But with accelerating economic globalization and information flows there is a need to revisit the concept. A new paradigm of Sustainable Human Security is required. This book argues that proponents of a human security approach should welcome efforts to remove the barriers between enterprise, corporations, aid and development agencies, government agencies, citizen groups and the UN; and work towards multi-stakeholder approaches and solutions for vulnerable populations. Such an approach is clearly vital in responding to the imperatives of concerted action on issues such as climate change, HIV, terrorism, organised crime and poverty. The agenda may have changed, but it remains true that almost all human tragedies are avoidable. This book examines a number of global problems through the lens of human security and the needs of the individual: global governance; health; the environment and the exploitation of natural resources; peace and reconciliation; the responsibility to protect; and economic development and prosperity. In the latter case, the role of business in the human security pantheon is promulgated. There are many reasons why businesses may want to engage with the needs of vulnerable populations – not least the fact that companies cannot function without secure trading environments. In addition, there are growing demands for corporate responsibility and citizenship from markets, customers, shareholders, employees and, critically, communities. This book throws new light on the human security agenda. What makes corporate citizenship in Africa not only fascinating, but also of critical importance, is that the continent embodies many of the most vexing dilemmas that business faces in its attempt to be responsible, ethical and sustainable .

Much of the writing in The Journal of Corporate Citizenship over the last few years has been concerned with stakeholder engagement, social partnership building, accountability, and reporting. To date, however, there has been little discussion of what comes next in potential transformational efforts to build a more secure, peaceful and ecologically sustainable world — or the corporate roles in building that world. This issue asks the question: What is the role of business in contributing to global peace and security over the long haul? As can readily be seen by the variety of papers and topics in the issue, the answer to that question is far from easy or simple, and each person who approaches the topic does so from a different perspective. Nonetheless, there are common threads and themes that arise when we begin thinking seriously about how businesses can contribute to peace and security and to what we are calling, after Polanyi, the next great transformation. Clearly, there are significant signs that transformation is needed in the world today.

This edition contains some of the proceedings of a conference held in October 2007 at the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK, on sustainable enterprise. Sustainable enterprise calls for more than the current rules of engagement (for corporate citizenship and corporate social responsibility) by calling on all enterprises in whatever sector and however constituted to operate within environmentally sustainable limits, to lower their ecological footprint, to enhance social equity, and to develop a sense of futurity. The papers in this issue each offer a different window into a sustainable-enterprise future, and describe journeys towards that future from very different starting points.

This is not a definitive history of corporate citizenship but for anyone interested in the who, what, why and how of this subject there are some very significant papers which may become definitive for scholars and reflective practitioners. Just as many people cannot imagine a world without mobile telephony and the Internet, and seem not to care or wonder how we got here, so too it is forgotten that much that is now taken for granted in terms of corporate reporting and accountability has been, and still is, the result of a hard struggle.

There is huge investor interest in the growth and investment potential of emerging markets, and there has been a significant increase in the scale of the investments being made in these markets. While concerns have been raised about the potential negative consequences of such investments in the context of specific projects and at the macroeconomic level, investors have suggested that these are necessary, albeit painful, steps towards greater economic welfare over the longer term.In recent years, investors have argued that "responsible investment" allows investors to maximize the financial and social benefits of their activities, and, simultaneously, to mitigate the negative impacts of their investments. As yet, however, little has been written – in either the practitioner or in the academic literature – about the responsibilities of investors in emerging markets, about the practicalities of implementing responsible investment in emerging markets, or about the outcomes (financial and social) that result.This special issue addresses this gap in the literature by presenting a series of major articles that analyse the implications – for investors and for society – of investors seeking to take a more responsible approach to their investments.Dr Sullivan notes: “The journal also opens up wider questions around the implications of foreign investment for the stability of emerging markets. The special edition of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship on Creating Global Citizens and Responsible Leadership begs many questions in its title. The eight papers and one Turning Point that make up this issue represent a truly global response to the debate and all approach the task of analysis and understanding from different perspectives, and all tell different stories. Does the rise of the global citizen mean the demise, or at least the transformation, of the nation-state? Does global citizenship mean we place ourselves in the corporate giant hands of Amazon, Google and Facebook and accept the growing diminishment in personal space? Or, as the pieces in this special edition argue, is global citizenship about some aspiration to higher goals of liberation, global democracy, enlightenment and concern for issues such as climate change, poverty, human rights and governance? The conclusion that can be reached from reading the nine papers that make up the Special Issue is that global citizenship is an aspirational goal which would, if achieved, correct international injustices and deal with issues such as poverty, climate change and bad governance. Many of our national leaders are constantly fighting internecine tribal battles in their political parties or with their local electorates and have little time or space to raise their games to become globally responsible leaders. But, as all these articles attest, this is what is needed at this time in the history of humanity. Responsible leadership in government, business or civil society is founded on (responsible) global citizenship, which in turn rests on rethinking the global good society.

How can we tell our stories differently? How can we go beyond the academic article or sustainability report? All reports and all scholarly pieces are narratives of a sort, each choosing which evidence suits and each having some sense of beginning, middle and end.Through their use of fiction, art and poetry the seven papers in this Special Issue of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship are challenging what might typically be expected as the form of an academic article. These challenges include identifying silent voices, linking of our hands, hearts and heads via art, a poem, a napkin to communicate, the life of an average academic, stories of gladiatorial combat for promotion, and a man’s day in a non-specific future. This mix of challenge in both form and message contributes to the ability of the papers to advance understanding, and reinforces how an innovative approach to conveying the message can advance debate.

Large Systems Change (LSC) is a field of study and action that is characterized by its focus on transformational pathways towards a participative, flourishing future through inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches that value engagement with practitioners and those aspiring for such futures.  Its emergence holds great promise for addressing critical issues.  Advancing its development requires aggressiveness to cross the many disciplinary, institutional and other boundaries and build the necessary scale of effort;  however, humbleness is also required to recognize that although we have substantial knowledge and methodologies for approaching LSC, we are still at early stages of their development. The papers in this Special Issue of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship focus on the question of how to scale to the field of LSC.
