'Hans Castorp filled his lungs with the pure mountain air--this fresh, light atmosphere that was so easy to inhale and held no scent of moisture, no content, no memories...'Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain (1924) is a social comedy with tragic overtones, providing a portrait of Europe in the first decades of the twentieth century. The novel recounts how an apparently simple North German engineer, Hans Castorp, comes to a tuberculosis sanatorium in Davos, Switzerland, intending to visit his sick cousin, and ends up staying for seven years. He matures intellectually and emotionally, encountering love and death amid a cast of vivid characters who are portrayed with Dickensian humour and sophisticated irony, until he is jerked out of his torpor by the outbreak of the First World War.This translation is accompanied by an accessible introduction by Ritchie Robertson, and detailed notes explaining the many cultural and historical references in the text.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Doing Feminist Theory critically examines feminist thought from the late 18th century to the present. Organized historically and by theoretical perspectives, it highlights the relationship between feminist theory and practice, as well as the diversity of feminist visions and voices by race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and global location. The history of feminist thought is interwoven with the history of the U.S. women's movement to ground theory in its socio-historical context and to illuminate paradigm shifts toward an increasing focus on difference, deconstruction and decentering in postmodernity. Links between the local and global are emphasized in theory application sections devoted to global and environmental issues.Oriented toward upper-level undergraduate students and master's-level graduate students, the distinguishing features of this text include: - a critical approach that highlights how theories can empower or silence - a diversity approach that focuses on the multiplicity of feminist voices by race, class, - an historical approach that grounds feminist theories in the social, economic, and - a dynamic approach that highlights paradigm shifts in feminist thought from - an interdisciplinary approach that interweaves the social sciences and the - a praxis-oriented approach with theory applications devoted to global and

This book is an attempt to discover the origins and significance of the General Prologue-to the Canterbury Tales. The interest of such an inquiry is many-sided. On the one hand, it throws light on the question of whether `life' or 'literature' was Chaucer's model in this work, on the relationship between Chaucer's twenty-odd pilgrims and the structure of medieval society, and on the role of their `estate' in determining the elements of which Chaucer composes their portraits. On the other hand, it makes suggestions about the ways in which Chaucer convinces us of the individuality of his pilgrims, about the nature of his irony, and the kind of moral standards implicit in the Prologue. This book suggests that Chaucer is ironically substituting for the traditional moral view of social structure a vision of a world where morality becomes as specialised to the individual as his work-life.
