This book presents a collection of essays honoring Professor Harry Heft, a leading figure in the field of ecological psychology, engaging critically with his work, thought and influence. Containing 12 chapters written by leading experts from philosophy and psychology, this text critically examines, questions, and expands on crucial ideas from Heft concerning the nature of cognition, its relationship to the body and the environment (including the social and cultural environment), and the main philosophical assumptions underlying the scientific study of psychological functions. It elaborates on the notion of affordance, and its connection to social, cultural and developmental psychology, as well as on the application of Roger Barker’s eco-behavioral program for current psychology and cognitive science. The book includes an extensive interview with Heft, where he reflects about the history, challenges and future of ecological psychology. Finally, it presents a chapter written by Heft, that offers a systematic response to the critical feedback. Given the increasing popularity of ecological psychology and the highly influential work of Harry Heft in related areas such as developmental, social and cultural psychology, and philosophy, this book will appeal to all those interested in the cognitive sciences from a scientific and philosophical perspective. It is also a must read for students of psychology, philosophy, and cognitive science departments.

This volume represents the first comprehensive collection of essays dedicated to exploring the conceptual and methodological intersections and tensions between analytic philosophy and the embodied–embedded approach to cognitive science, commonly referred to as "e-cognition."Following an introductory chapter by the editor, which situates the discussion within its broader philosophical landscape, the contributors address a range of themes that traverse both analytic philosophy and 4E-cognition. These include skillful coping, habit formation, the nature and status of representations, consciousness, communication, and the social and political implications of embodied and situated approaches. The volume also examines how various theoretical traditions—such as ecological psychology, teleosemantics, enactivism, the Pittsburgh School, and intentional realism—engage with and apply these ideas.Analytic Philosophy and 4E Cognition: Conceptual Analysis, Embodiment, and Situatedness will appeal to advanced students and scholars in analytic philosophy, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of psychology, as well as those working in cognitive science with an interest in embodied and situated cognition.

The Selected Writings of Edward S. Reed brings to light the groundbreaking contributions of one of the most original thinkers in ecological psychology and philosophy of mind. This volume offers readers a rare opportunity to engage with the depth and breadth of Reed’s theoretical insights. Edward S. Reed (1954–1997) was a thinker whose work forged a path for the integration of ecological psychology with philosophy, evolutionary theory, and political thought. Reed’s unique synthesis of James Gibson’s ecological approach with Darwinian and pragmatist perspectives yielded a philosophy of perception and action that was both radical and empirically grounded. Despite his untimely death, Reed left behind a body of work that continues to challenge conventional views in psychology and the cognitive sciences. This book includes Reed’s key published writings, complemented by previously unpublished manuscripts that reveal his intellectual development and expanding concerns. The editors have also compiled a series of remembrances written by prominent ecological psychologists and his family, who reflect on Reed’s impact, both personal and professional, and inside and outside ecological psychology. As the fields of the philosophy of mind and the cognitive sciences increasingly turns toward embodied and situated approaches, Reed’s ideas emerge as strikingly prescient. His integration of ecological psychology with philosophical rigor and socio-political awareness makes his work more relevant today than ever. This collection not only honors Reed’s memory but also reintroduces his voice into contemporary conversations where it is sorely needed.

This book is the first monograph fully devoted to analyzing the philosophical aspects of affordances. The concept of affordance, coined and developed in the field of ecological psychology, describes the possibilities for action available in the environment. This work offers a systematic approach to the key philosophical features of affordances, such as their ontological characterization, their relation to normative practices, and the idea of agency that follows from viewing affordances as key objects of perception, while also proposing an innovative philosophical characterization of affordances as dispositional properties. The Philosophy of Affordances analyzes the implications that a proper understanding of affordances has for the philosophy of mind and the cognitive sciences, and aims to intensify the dialogue between philosophy and ecological psychology in which each discipline benefits from the tools and insights of the other.
