The events occurred in the last years have shown how the threat related to both intentional and natural disasters could bring the civil and the military worlds closer in the conceivement and deployment of countermeasures as well as in the identification of effective strategies for enhancing the Planet safety and security. In this frame, the concept of dual use ? the set of technologies and applications that can be exploited for both civil and military purposes - becomes a key-topic. In addition, the aerospace is a strategic building block in the deployment of a network centric environment that aims at the global protection of the mankind. Aerospace is also a natural environment for dual use: many of the related enabling technologies have been first developed for the military world and then applied to civil ? including commercial - purposes. On September 12-14, 2007 an International Symposium has been held in Roma, Italy, joining the dual use approach with the aerospace technology: the international community has been gathered around the key-topic: aerospace technologies and applications for dual use. The event has called experts and operators from the military and civil community, belonging to industry, scientific and governmental institutions. The common aim was an effective convergence between the available and perspected technologies for the civil and military worlds as well as the conceivement of applications that can take the maximum benefit from the dual approach, optimizing the available economic resources. The Symposium has included invited-only contributions and an industrial panel. The main results of the Symposium, derived from key-note speeches, invited lectures, panel discussions and conclusions have created the starting material to develop this Edited Book.

This book of Proceedings contains papers of the "Third European Workshop on Mobile/Personal Satcoms" (EMPS ''98), held in Venice, Italy, November 1998. For the third time, EMPS has given to the experts an opportunity for exchanging opinions and novel ideas in the exciting field of mobile and personal satellite communications. As with the 1996 edition, EMPS ''98 issued a formal call for papers, gathering a large number of contributions from many different countries. Each submitted paper has been reviewed by international referees and, finally, selected by the Workshop Steering Committee (WSC). Furthermore, key-topics in the field of mobile/personal satcoms have also been focused on through a few invited papers. As EMPS has been conceived to gather trends and novelties in the field of mobile/personal satcoms, it is tightly matched to the natural evolution of the field itself. In this frame, the reader will notice how the dominant topics are related to system and network issues, while a very little number of contributions have been provided in the propagation and channel related areas. This represents a natural trend of a field, where deep efforts have been paid in the past years to understanding and modelling the physical layer and where the present interest is mostly migrating to the applications. Further changes and novelties may be envisaged in the future of this field. I believe that EMPS will continue to represent an effective opportunity to catch and understand more deeply this evolution.

This book provides an overview of the latest R&D advancements in the field of ICT technologies inherent to a New Space vision. The book presents a system-level and technology-level description of future space networking and communications. The authors also expand the vision to interplanetary networks. The book spans hardware and software technologies for future space communication networks, also considering very modern paradigms like quantum technologies and Softwarization. In the book, the word “space” is intended in a wider sense than the usual “satellite communications”, including new and partially unexplored fields like quantum space communications, interplanetary communications, and extra-terrestrial Radio Access Networks (RANs). The book includes applications including Internet of Space Things, Tactile Internet/Digital twins for Space and discusses future challenges like those involved by the concept of “sustainable Space”.Provides an overview of the latest R&D advancements in the field of ICT technologies inherent to a New Space vision;Considers visions and perspectives of space technology, including a through overview of satellite communications;Presents a system-level overview of future space networking and communications.

Imagination depicts earthquakes as a mysterious and magic matter. However, as scientists and technical, we do have to consider them also form a different perspective: they are natural phenomena that evolve with time and depend on a number of variables.Their modeling can help us to reply to the simplest and ? at the same time ? the most complex question: are earthquakes predictable? In case the answer is affirmative, what could be the role of the extremely mature Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in setting up an effective prediction process? How artificial Intelligence Algorithms can contribute to the picture? The book presents our vision about the above matter. The book is organized in three parts. Part 1 frames the possible use of ICT and Artificial Intelligence in dealing with earthquake-related Disaster Ahead management (DAM). Part 2 presents modeling tools for the earthquake issue and proposes possible ICT tools for supporting the earthquake DAM. Part 3 presents and experimental network for earthquake DAM based on communications and navigation (GNSS) tools.
