Architectural Historiography and the Postcolonial
Inbunden, Engelska, 2021

This anthology collects developing scholarship that outlines a new decentred history of global modernism in architecture using postcolonial and other related theoretical frameworks. By both revisiting the canons of modernism and seeking to decolonize and globalize those canons, the volume explores what a genuinely "global" history of architectural modernism might begin to look like. Its chapters explore the historiography and weaknesses of modernism's normative interpretations and propose alternatives to them. The collection offers essays that interrogate transnationalism in new ways, reconsiders the agency of the subaltern and the roles played by infrastructures, materials, and global institutions in propagating a diversity of modernisms internationally. Issues such as colonial modernism, architectural pedagogy, cultural imperialism, and spirituality are engaged. With essays from both established scholars and up-and-coming researchers, this is an important reference for a new understanding of this crucial and developing topic.

In the century between 1830 and 1930, following independence from Spain and Portugal, major cities in Latin America experienced large-scale growth, with the development of a new urban bourgeois elite interested in projects of modernization and rapid industrialization. At the same time, the lower classes were eradicated from old city districts and deported to the outskirts. The Metropolis in Latin America, 1830-1930 surveys this expansion, focusing on six capital cities-Havana, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, and Lima-as it examines sociopolitical histories, town planning, art and architecture, photography, and film in relation to the metropolis. Drawing from the Getty Research Institute's vast collection of books, prints, and photographs from this period, largely unpublished until now, this volume reveals the cities' changes through urban panoramas, plans depicting new neighborhoods, and photographs of novel transportation systems, public amenities, civic spaces, and more. It illustrates the transformation of colonial cities into the monumental modern metropolises that, by the end of the 1920s, provided fertile ground for the emergence of today's Latin American megalapolis.

This reprint of the notebook Album Punjab Simla. Chandigarh, Mars 1951 kept by Le Corbusier from his two-week visit in the area that would become Chandigarh, the new capital city of the Indian state of Punjab, presents his written or sketched memos and personal reflections as well as notes and schematic solutions elaborated during meetings. The Album Punjab constitutes a primary source for reconstructing the topics addressed by the small team of architects and governmental officials who in only a few days developed the outlines of the Chandigarh plan. The spiralbound notebook facsimile is accompanied by a paperback volume featuring previously unpublished photographs taken by Le Corbusier’s cousin Pierre Jeanneret during this early expedition. Jeanneret documented the landscape and people that the architects encountered upon their arrival – a scenario destined to totally change with the birth of the great city. A detailed commentary by architectural historian Maristella Casciato is also included. It reflects on the variety of topics assem- bled in the notebook and traces the story of these days in which the new capital city was planned.

Chandigarh Casablanca: How Architects, Experts, Politicians, International Agencies, and Citizens Negotiate Modern Planning documents two different but complementary urban realities that have played a fundamental role in the imagination, the definition, and the redefinition of the 20th-century modern city. Chandigarh built by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry and Jane B. Drew together with Indian architects and Casablanca, designed by Michel Ecochard and young Moroccan and French architects, share the foundation in a European-American understanding of avant-garde architecture and urbanism. Yet life and further development of both places have been decisively influenced by their own respective culture. This new book decenters the dominant European-American view and contributes to a new geography of the modern city. The contemporary gaze shifts from the symbolic use of architecture to construct monumental masterpieces to the formation of public space, housing, and social facilities. Comprehensive essays by Maristella Casciato and Tom Avermaete are complemented by a wealth of photographs, plans, documents and other illustrations. The book also features photo-essays by French-Moroccan artist Yto Barrada and Japanese photographer Takashi Homma, counteracting the reading of the two cities as 'exported urbanism' .
