For the majority of the populations of the German states, warsduring an era of conscription were not merely a matter of history and memory; rather, they concerned subjects'' hopes, fears, and expectations of the future.This is the second volume of Mark Hewitson''s study of the violence of war in the German lands during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It investigates the complex relationship between military conflicts and the violent acts of individual soldiers. In particular, it considers the contradictory impact of ''pacification'' in civilian life and exposure to increasingly destructive technologies of killing during war-time. This contradiction reached its nineteenth-century apogee during the ''warsof unification'', leaving an ambiguous imprint on post-war discussions of military conflict.

This volume analyses and compares different forms of nationalism across a range of European countries and regions during the long nineteenth century. It aims to put detailed studies of nationalist politics and thought, which have proliferated over the last ten years or so, into a wider European context. By means of such contextualization, together with new and systematic comparisons, What is a Nation? Europe 1789-1914 reassesses the arguments put forward in the principal works on nationalism as a whole, many of which pre-date the proliferation of case studies in the 1990s and which, as a consequence, make only inadequate reference to the national histories of European states. The study reconsiders whether the distinction between civic and ethnic identities and politics in Europe has been overstated and whether it needs to be replaced altogether by a new set of concepts or types. What is a Nation? explores the relationship between this and other typologies, relating them to complex processes of industrialization, increasing state intervention, secularization, democratization and urbanization. Debates about citizenship, political economy, liberal institutions, socialism, empire, changes in the states system, Darwinism, high and popular culture, Romanticism and Christianity all affected - and were affected by - discussion of nationhood and nationalist politics. The volume investigates the significance of such controversies and institutional changes for the history of modern nationalism, as it was defined in diverse European countries and regions during the long nineteenth century. By placing particular nineteenth-century nationalist movements and nation-building in a broader comparative context, prominent historians of particular European states give an original and authoritative reassessment, designed to appeal to students and academic readers alike, of one of the most contentious topics of the modern period.

This original study examines the interrelationship between the construction of national identity and the transformation of political thought in Germany before the First World War. During the decade or so before the war, the German Empire was challlenged openly by both left and right for the first time since the 1870s. Paradoxically, however, this pre-war crisis of Germanys system of government occurred during a period of increasing nationalism, which created a solid cross-party basis of support for the Empire as a nation-state.This pioneering study argues that Wilhelmine debates about the reform of the German Empire can only be understood in the context of a broader discussion and comparison of European and American political regimes which took place in Germany after the turn of the century. In such contemporary debates about a German Sonderwag, France remained a principal point of reference because French-style parliamentarism had come to be viewed as the main alternative to German constitutionalism. By analysing Wilhelmine depictions of the Third Republic, Dr Hewitson revises accepted interpretations of German politics and nationalism.

Brexit, populism, and Euroscepticism seem to have challenged old assumptions about European integration and raised the prospect of disintegration. This book re-examines why the European Union and its forerunners were created and investigates how and why they have changed. It links contemporary events to historical explanation, arguing that there were long-term sets of conditions, dating back to the 1920s, which pushed European governments to cooperate economically and to try to resolve their diplomatic differences. The failure of the French and German governments to create what Aristide Briand had called a 'European federal union' demonstrated both the precariousness of the enterprise and its connection to the domestic politics of European states. After 1945, the unexpected advent of a 'Cold War' and the military, diplomatic and economic presence of the United States in Europe facilitated the gradual development of habits of cooperation and institutional 'integration', but they also placed limits on European governments' activities, as did disagreements between political parties and the expectations of citizens. As a consequence, supranational bodies such as the European Commission have been accompanied - and often overshadowed - by intergovernmental institutions such as the European Council, with the EU as a whole functioning in important respects as a type of confederation. The volume addresses a series of large-scale historical questions which are integral to an understanding of the European Union. It asks how and why citizens of member states have identified with the EU; how matters of 'security' affected the development of the European Community during and after the Cold War; whether economic and social convergence have taken place, and with what consequences; and why European institutions have come to function as they have. The study is thematic, focusing on the most important aspects of European integration and explaining why member states have decided to carry out - or have consented to - the unique experiment of the European Union.

How did World War I affect the course of German history in the 1920s and early 1930s? As the historian Karl Alexander von Müller put it, the 'storm' of transformation did not end in 1918, leaving contemporaries uncertain where the changes already wrought by the First World War would lead.Shadows of War: Histories and Memories of Violence in the German Republic, 1918-1933 investigates what happened when the soldiers returned to Germany. It examines the lives of those born as children of the German Empire in the late 1870s, 1880s and 1890s, who became adults around the turn of the century, only to be marched off to a different world during the Great War. The German Republic itself was a product of the war: because of the Treaty of Versailles, the republic's leaders could not put it forward as a harbinger of 'peace'.Once the guns had fallen silent on 11 November 1918, two days after Philipp Scheidemann's unexpected declaration of the republic, German troops started to leave their barracks in the Reich and stream out of the rear areas and from the Western Front, often having discharged themselves. Millions more followed behind in their units until they reached the German border, when many decided to make their own way home. They were preceded by sailors, making their way south from the Baltic and North Sea ports. By December, thousands of troops had arrived in cities across Germany, providing military support for workers' and soldiers' councils, state governments and local authorities. It was in these circumstances that the boundary between military and political violence became blurred - and that modern German history was remade.

The Great War turned upside down the lives of millions of people. To contemporaries such as Walter Benjamin, it seemed as though a world of horse-drawn streetcars had been swept aside by political radicalism, inflation, the collapse of the international order, and the downfall of European culture, leading to a devaluation of experience itself. This volume investigates competing ideas, images, and stereotypes of a European ‘East’, exploring its role in defining European and national conceptions of self and other since the eighteenth century.Through a set of original case studies, this collection explores the intersection between discourses about a more distant, exotic, or colonial ‘Orient’ with a more immediate ‘East’. The book considers this shifting, imaginary border from different points of view and demonstrates that the location, definition, and character of the ‘East’, often associated with socio-economic backwardness and other unfavourable attributes, depended on historical circumstances, political preferences, cultural assumptions, and geography. This book looks at the representations of modern war by analysing texts and examining the ways in which authors relate to the atrocious horrors of war.
Rejecting the assumption that violence is simply a denial of reason or, at best, a pathological form of collective sadism, this book considers it â€˜a cultural actâ€™ that needs to be understood as underpinned by a series of shared and accepted norms and values stemming from a society at a given moment of its history and shaped by its language. Traditional vocabulary and language seem inadequate to describe soldiersâ€™ experience of modern warfare. The problem for writers is to depict and render intelligible a dramatically unprecedented reality through recourse to something familiar. For some historians and literary critics, the absurdity of the First World War has shaped our ironic and disenchanted reading of the entire twentieth century. Yet these ways of coping with the urge to communicate inexpressible feelings and emotions in most cases are not sufficient to overcome the incoherence of the sentiments felt and the events witnessed.
The contributors attempt to address the questions and issues that are posed by the highly ambiguous views, texts, and representations examined in this volume.
