An atmospheric crime novel set in 1930s London where the mysterious death of a policeman exposes a wider world of vice and corruption."Friday, 18 December, 1936. I went to my funeral this morning…"So begins the diary of John Steadman, an ambitious young journalist in London. When he gets a tip-off about a murdered policeman, he thinks he's found his scoop. Trouble is, no-one else seems to know anything about it… or they're not telling. Then John finds someone willing to talk. At least, someone who was. Now they're hanging from a meat hook in a refrigerated locker and John's on the verge of a front-page scandal that will make or break his career. But to get to the heart of this dark story, he must first go undercover. Six feet undercover, to be precise…Based on a shocking true story, Snow Hill vividly brings to life a London you never knew about – an underworld that doesn't officially exist and until now has never been documented.

Macromolecular Crystallography is the study of macromolecules (proteins and nucleic acids) using X-ray crystallographic techniques in order to determine their molecular structure. The knowledge of accurate molecular structures is a pre-requisite for rational drug design, and for structure-based function studies to aid the development of effective therapeutic agents and drugs. The successful determination of the complete genome (genetic sequence) of several species (including humans) has recently directed scientific attention towards identifying the structure and function of the complete complement of proteins that make up that species; a new and rapidly growing field of study called 'structural genomics'. There are now several important and well-funded global initiatives in operation to identify all of the proteins of key model species. One of the main requirements for these initiatives is a high-throughput crystallization facility to speed-up the protein identification process. The extent to which these technologies have advanced, calls for an updated review of current crystallographic theory and practice. This practical reference book features the latest conventional and high-throughput methods, and includes contributions from a team of internationally recognized leaders and experts. It will be of relevance and use to graduate students, research scientists and professionals currently working in the field of conventional and high-throughput macromolecular crystallography.

Don't Look Now, released in 1973, confirmed director Nicolas Roeg as one of themost stylish and innovative British directors of the postwar period. Adaptedfrom a short story by Daphne du Maurier, it is both a complex study of howpeople come to terms with grief and a chilling tale of murder set among thecanals and churches of Venice. Featuring telling performances by Julie Christieand Donald Sutherland as the couple whose daughter has tragically died,Don't Look Now depicts the way in which the macabre and the everyday areintertwined. In his lucid, subtle account, Mark Sanderson describes the collaborationbetween director and actors that sustained the film's emotional richness. He returns to du Maurier's original text and to the traditions of Gothic writingthat underpin Don't Look Now's combination of horror, melodrama and blackcomedy. Sanderson examines the film's intricate visual style, uncovering theway in which particular motifs are used to amplify its depiction of two terribledeaths. He finds compensation for the film's grimly fatalistic view of life in itscelebration of sexual relationships and the power of recollection. The bookincludes an exclusive and in-depth interview with Roeg as well as rare andunpublished comments from Christie. In his foreword to this special edition, published to celebrate the 20thanniversary of the BFI Film Classics series, Jason Wood places Don't Look Nowin the context of Roeg's film-making careeer, and draws upon Roeg's revealinginsights into the film's production.

During recent years, huge efforts have been made to establish digital libraries, in a variety of media, offered from a variety of sources, and intended for a variety of professional and private user communities. As digital data collections proliferate, problems of resource selection and data fusion become major issues. Traditional search engines, even the best ones, are unable to provide access to the hidden web of information that is only available via digital library search interfaces.Originating from the SIGIR 2003 Workshop on Distributed Information Retrieval, held in Toronto, Canada in August 2003, this book presents extended and revised workshop papers as well as several invited papers on the topic to round off coverage of the core issues. The papers are devoted to recent research on the design and implementation of methods and tools for resource discovery, resource description, resource selection, data fusion, and user interaction.

This volume contains the papers presented at the 13th International Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval (SPIRE), held October 11-13, 2006, in Glasgow, Scotland. The SPIRE annual symposium provides an opportunity for both new and established researchers to present original contributions to areas such as string processing (dictionary algorithms, text searching, pattern matching, text c- pression, text mining, natural language processing, and automata-based string processing); information retrieval languages, applications, and evaluation (IR modelling, indexing, ranking and ?ltering, interface design, visualization, cro- lingual IR systems, multimedia IR, digital libraries, collaborative retrieval, W- related applications, XML, information retrieval from semi-structured data, text mining, and generation of structured data from text); and interaction of biology and computation (sequencing and applications in molecular biology, evolution and phylogenetics, recognition of genes and regulatory elements, and sequen- driven protein structure prediction). The papers in this volume were selected from 102 papers submitted from over 20 di?erent countries in response to the Call for Papers. A total of 26 submissions were accepted as full papers, yielding an acceptance rate of about 25%. In view of the large number of good-quality submissions the Program Committee decided to accept 5 short papers, that have also been included in the proceedings. SPIRE 2006 also featured two talks by invited speakers: Jamie Callan (Carnegie Mellon University, USA) and Martin Farach-Colton (Rutgers University, USA).
