It is not only green thinkers who value the environment. Decisions on how to respond to global environmental change, energy policy or where to site a new road are all informed by values. People bring very different sets of values to the understanding of environmental issues depending on whether they come from developed or developing countries, are applying an expert or lay person judgment, are making policy decisions from a distance or are directly affected at their local level. This book examines the multitude of ways in which we value the environment from a social science perspective. This is a multidisciplinary collection with contributions from academics with backgrounds in philosophy, sociology, psychology, economics, geography, law and engineering. The book is divided into four sections: the first addresses fundamental theoretical and conceptual issues; the second explores the methodological problems of uncovering people s values; the third looks at some of the policy dilemmas which arise when different sets of values in relations to the environment conflict; and the final section deals with issues of value-change through education about the environment. In a world characterised by ‘poly crisis’, two major crises stand out: a crisis of time and a crisis of care. This open access book investigates what it means to wait in and for healthcare in an era when care is politicised and rationed and time is lived at increasingly different and complex tempos. Waiting times within the UK National Health Service (NHS) have been at historic levels through and since the Covid-19 pandemic. Although this sense of a crisis of waiting is culturally and historically specific, it casts important light on the ‘crisis’ of welfare structures across the Global North. Such a crisis in waiting times brings both a call for judgment and a call to action.This book argues that all healthcare entails waiting and other forms of elongated time, such as pausing to observe, staying alongside patients at end of life, or stopping treatment as an ethical intervention. Instead of trying to 'solve' the crisis of the NHS by moving people more quickly through the system, reallocating time to address ‘shortfalls’ to reduce waits to access care, or even abandoning the social commitment to a universal service, the authors argue that it is vital to pay attention, first, to how time and care continue to be made in the current system. It is only by reckoning with the essential ‘untimeliness’ of care that we might then be able to conceptualise interventions in the NHS that are ‘timely’ and that sustain its social mission.The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This open access book presents the findings from on-site research into radioactive cesium contamination in various agricultural systems affected by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011. This third volume in the series reports on studies undertaken at contaminated sites such as farmland, forests, and marine and freshwater environments, with a particular focus on livestock, wild plants and mushrooms, crops, and marine products in those environments. It also provides additional data collected in the subsequent years to show how the radioactivity levels in agricultural products and their growing environments have changed with time and the route by which radioactive materials entered agricultural products as well as their movement between different components (e.g., soil, water, and trees) within an environmental system (e.g., forests). The book covers various topics, including radioactivity testing of food products; decontamination trials for rice and livestock production; the state of contamination in, trees, mushrooms, and timber; the dynamics of radioactivity distribution in paddy fields and upland forests; damage incurred by the forestry and fishery industries; and the change in consumers’ attitudes. Chapter 19 introduces a real-time radioisotope imaging system, a pioneering technique to visualize the movement of cesium in soil and in plants. This is the only book to provide systematic data on the actual change of radioactivity, and as such is of great value to all researchers who wish to understand the effect of radioactive fallout on agriculture. In addition, it helps the general public to better understand the issues of radio-contamination in the environment. The project is ongoing; the research groups from the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences of The University of Tokyo continue their work in the field to further evaluate the long-term effects of the Fukushima accident.
