This collection of essays provides dynamic new perspectives on 100 works of art that span centuries of human creativity around the globe Across ages and cultures, artists have found inspiration in the human urge for connection. This compendium of short, thought-provoking essays and surprising insights by the staff of The Metropolitan Museum of Art focuses on 100 works—both famous highlights and little-known gems—to explore artistic representations of relationships, the self, politics, spirituality, and the environment. The wide-ranging texts probe the enduring resonance of an Egyptian temple built two thousand years ago, reflect on an ancient Roman sculpture of a wounded warrior, examine spirituality through a fourteenth-century Chinese incense box, muse on Giorgio de Chirico’s family history drawn from his painting Ariadne (1913), and touch on many other topics. For the first time, a book brings together voices from across The Met—curators, conservators, designers, editors, educators, and librarians—to consider how art inspires us to connect to the world and to each other. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art/Distributed by Yale University Press

An illuminating profile of one of today’s most innovative and forward-looking architects, whose materials-based practice explores how space can provoke emotional response  Architect Frida Escobedo’s (b. 1979) designs for public spaces have received global accolades. In 2022, she was commissioned to design the new Oscar L.Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing for Modern and Contemporary Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Suspended Moment is the first overall survey of her career to-date including her award-winning structures that treat space as a language—layered, responsive, and reflective of both a site’s history and its present. This timely profile of the first woman to design a wing at the Museum explores Escobedo’s attention to gender, accessibility, and the environment. Focusing on both temporary and permanent structures in the context of her burgeoning career, the publication delves into Escobedo’s two-decade multimedia practice. Interviews with the architect alongside informed essays discuss the bases of her work and her diverse inspirations, ranging from concrete poetry to her hometown of Mexico City, which she describes as a “modern metropolis with ancient roots . . . in other words, a living, breathing museum.”  Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art/Distributed by Yale University Press

The work of Roni Horn, born in 1955, was on view in 2009 in a major retrospective at museums including Tate Modern London and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. She explores the subject of changing identities using a wide variety of media, including photography, sculpture, installation, drawing and text. The artist plays with similarities and differences in photographic portraits in particular, sounding out the ambiguity of various human facial expressions. The face becomes a projection screen for an internal dialogue for the viewer.

Orange, yellow, green, blue – what happens in the human brain when colours are not seen with the physical eye, but instead aurally experienced with one’s ears? This pub lication focuses on a sound installation by the Swiss artist Daniele Buetti commissioned by the Schirn Museum in Frankfurt, which transfers colour theory, meditation and hypnosis into an artistic context. The Swiss conceptual artist Daniele Buetti, born in 1955, is a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Münster in Germany. His artistic work spans many media. In the 1990s he rose to fame with his modified photographs of supermodels. His sound installation It’s all in the mind is based on a 25-minute audio performance taking the audience through techniques of hypnosis. In his work, Buetti uses 'colour purification’ techniques of hypnotic suggestion that conjure up different colours and their psychological effects. Interviews with well-known specialists complement this interdisciplinary volume.
