This is the first book that analyzes the transnational impact of the Great War simultaneously on two countries, Spain and Argentina, that remained neutral throughout the conflict. Both countries were very relevant in the conception of propaganda and policies of belligerent countries such as France, Germany and Great Britain and showed that the conflict had a global influence and affected deeply local political and cultural processes, even in areas geographically distant from the trenches.Within this framework, this book is focused on three aspects that are analyzed dynamically throughout the whole war from a transnational perspective: neutrality as a space of dispute between pro-Allies and pro-German sectors and its relation with local politics, the debate about what positions should be assumed in order to guarantee a world without war, and the polemics on the ideas of nations and supra-nations (Hispanism, Latinism, Pan-Americanism). The conclusions of the book highlight that the radicalization that exploded in 1917 in both countries was fundamental in shaping the political radicalization of the last months of the conflict and the postwar period. As happened in Europe, the Great War did not finish in 1918 and its traces continued in the 1920s and 1930s.

This book offers a fresh perspective on right-wing and left-wing revolutions, as well as political uprisings against the liberal order in interwar Europe, focusing on how they were politically used in the public sphere and exploring how these events were narrated and visually represented to justify new authoritarian systems and generate consensus around them.Bringing together both senior academics and early-career scholars, the volume examines ten emblematic case studies combining original research on overlooked aspects of well-known events with analyses of lesser-studied, or even ‘peripheral’ cases. Approaches to the impact of Wilsonianism have traditionally been developed from the fields of international relations, international law and the study of global self-determination movements.This book offers a complementary and original perspective by examining the political influence of Wilsonian ideals in the broader crisis of liberalism following the First World War. While taking into account Wilson’s role in inspiring self-determination movements, the book primarily analyses the political construction and appropriation of Wilson’s image – as a reformist, pacifist, democratic and liberal leader – by liberal and socialist circles in Europe and Latin America. At the same time, it explores the rejection of Wilsonianism expressed by right-wing political forces and intellectuals, both during the war and in the aftermath of the Treaty of Versailles. Adopting a comparative and transnational approach, the study focuses on “peripheral” contexts that have received limited scholarly attention – such as Spain, Portugal and various countries in Latin America – while also incorporating two key cases, France and Italy, due to their close political and ideological connections with the former.This book is a valuable resource for students and scholars in the fields of Global History and International Affairs, as well as all those interested in Latin American or Modern European History.

Despite being separated by thousands of miles and shaped by distinctive national histories, the countries of Spain, Italy, and Argentina were intertwined in a variety of ways during the first half of the twentieth century. This collection brings scholars from each nation into conversation with one another to trace these complex historical connections over the period of the two World Wars. Deploying “Latinity” as a novel analytical framework, it gives a broad and dynamic perspective on cases of reciprocal exchange that include the influence of Italian Socialism on Hispanophone leftists; the roots of Argentine liberalism in Machiavelli and Spanish Nationalist thinkers; and the web of connections among Italian Fascism, Argentine Nacionalismo, and Spanish Francoism.
