Die Klassifikation wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) herausgegeben und umfasst im Wesentlichen alle anatomischen Regionen gemäß den WHO-Richtlinien (WHO-Richtlinien zur Klassifikation der Krankheiten für die Onkologie (ICD-O)). Die Beschreibung jeder Region umfasst die klinischen sowie die pathologischen Kriterien für die Bestimmung der T-, N- und M-Kategorien, die Abgrenzung der anatomischen Bezirke bzw. Unterbezirke, eine Definition der regionären Lymphknoten, das histopathologische Grading sowie eine Stadiengruppierung. Die 9. Auflage dokumentiert lückenlos die aktuellen Definitionen der TNM-Tumorklassifikation.
