Die "Klosterneuburger Schlaganfall-Datenbank" zeigt die Bedeutung eines prospektiven Registers von Schlaganfallpatienten für Klinik und Forschung. In einer fallkontrollierten Studie wird das Risikoprofil des zerebralen Insults untersucht und das unterschiedlich hohe relative Risiko einzelner kardialer und vaskulärer Faktoren erhoben. Als wichtigstes klinisches Kriterium des Insults wird die Ätiologie angesehen. Dabei zeigt sich, daß bei routinemäßiger Anwendung von Computertomographie und Neurosonologie lediglich zwei von drei Schlaganfällen ätiologisch geklärt werden können. Von allen ätiologischen Subtypen des Insults haben lakunäre Infarkte die beste Prognose.
