This work reports the findings of the Professional Competence of Teachers, Cognitively Activating Instruction, and Development of Students´ Mathematical Literacy project (COACTIV). COACTIV applies a broad, innovative conceptualization of teacher competence to examine how mathematics teachers’ knowledge, beliefs, motivational orientations, and self-regulation skills influence their instructional practice and teaching outcomes In this project data was collected on various aspects of teacher competence and classroom instruction from the perspective of both the teachers themselves and their students. Moreover, it gauges the effects of these teacher characteristics on student learning, as indexed by the progress students in each class. Questions addressed in the study which are reported in this volume include: What are the characteristics of successful teaching? What distinguishes teachers who succeed in their profession? How can the quality of instruction be improved?

This open access book provides an overview of Felix Klein’s ideas, highlighting developments in university teaching and school mathematics related to Klein’s thoughts, stemming from the last century. It discusses the meaning, importance and the legacy of Klein’s ideas today and in the future, within an international, global context. Presenting extended versions of the talks at the Thematic Afternoon at ICME-13, the book shows that many of Klein’s ideas can be reinterpreted in the context of the current situation, and offers tips and advice for dealing with current problems in teacher education and teaching mathematics in secondary schools. It proves that old ideas are timeless, but that it takes competent, committed and assertive individuals to bring these ideas to life. Throughout his professional life, Felix Klein emphasised the importance of reflecting upon mathematics teaching and learning from both a mathematical and a psychological or educational point ofview. He also strongly promoted the modernisation of mathematics in the classroom, and developed ideas on university lectures for student teachers, which he later consolidated at the beginning of the last century in the three books on elementary mathematics from a higher standpoint.

Das Buch enthält vertiefte Auswertungen des PISA-Tests zu den mathematischen Leistungen von Jugendlichen in Deutschland. Es stellt die Konzeption und Entwicklung des nationalen Ergänzungstests dar. Eine systematische Auswahl von Beispielaufgaben zeigt die Breite des Tests auf. Die Erweiterung des internationalen Ansatzes ermöglicht differenzierte Analysen mathematischer Kompetenzen. Sowohl die theoretischen Grundlagen als auch die empirischen Befunde der Analysen werden dargestellt.

Mit dem Ländervergleich zu ,PISA 2000' liefert das Deutsche PISA-Konsortium vergleichende Analysen von Schulleistungen in den einzelnen Ländern der Bundesrepublik. Untersuchungsgegenstand ist das Niveau der Lesekompetenz sowie der mathematischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Grundbildung von Jugendlichen im nationalen Vergleich und sein Platz im internationalen Leistungsspektrum. Zur Einordnung der Ergebnisse werden die unterschiedlich hohen Anteile an Jugendlichen aus Migrationsfamilien, die unterschiedliche Sozialstruktur der Länder und die soziale Herkunft der 15-jährigen Schülerinnen und Schüler berücksichtigt. Die Analysen stehen im Zusammenhang von Bildungspolitischen Bemühungen, die Gleichwertigkeit der schulischen Ausbildung und die Durchlässigkeit der Bildungssysteme in den verschiedenen Bundesländern zu sichern und die Vergleichbarkeit ihrer Schulabschlüsse zu gewährleisten.
