Crossroads in the Black Aegean is a compendious, timely, and fascinating study of African rewritings of Greek tragedy. He held one of the two major fleet commands between 1939 and 1942, and in 1942-43, he was Allied naval commander for the great amphibious operations in the Mediterranean. From 1943 to 1946, he was the First Sea Lord and a participant in the wartime conferences with Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt and the US Chiefs of Staff, deliberating the global strategy for Allied victory.He also led a very active public life for almost twenty years after his retirement in 1946. Cunningham's papers are abundant for the period 1939-63 and are supplemented here by Cabinet and Admiralty records, papers of his service contemporaries and of Churchill, and by memories of his family and friends, as well as extensive US archives and private papers.

This book is the first to focus on the theme of tradition as an integral feature of the ancient and modern Olympic Games. Just as ancient athletes and spectators were conscious of Olympic traditions of poetic praise, sporting achievement, and catastrophic shortcoming, so the revived Games have been consistently cast as a legacy of ancient Greece. The essays here examine how this supposed inheritance has been engineered, celebrated, exploited, or challenged. The Athens Games in 2004 were widely represented as a return to ancient, and modern, origins; the Beijing Games in 2008, meanwhile, saluted a radically different ancient civilisation. What is the Olympic future for ancient Greece?Thinking the Olympics brings together contributions from various disciplines, including cultural history, classics, comparative literature, and art history. Together these perspectives foreground two opposing plots which recur and collide ritually on the occasion of the Games. On the one hand, the Games present themselves as an ideal enactment of pure, intrinsic Olympic values; on the other, the Games appear as a messy performance of extrinsic investments by diverse parties with their own interests, commercial and political. Power, money, property, and identity are persistently at stake in the Games. But in a time when credit and trust among nations are in short supply, the Olympic arena and its flexible traditions may be where exchange can be done.

Displaced to Italy by their politics and morals, Byron and Shelley wrote, between 1816 and 1823, a series of closet dramas that the author reveals as being deeply embedded in contemporary radical culture. Why did they write dramas in Italy that were to be published in England but not to be produced theatrically? Why do these dramas invoke and apparently oppose textual and theatrical versions of themselves? In answering these questions, this book addresses other questions about the historical invention of English literature, the relation between literature and drama, and the relation between literature and political culture.The plays are shown to acquiesce in, and yet also resist, subvert, and ironize by means of a parodic self-censorship, the political, theatrical, and ecclesiastical censorship of the post-Waterloo period. The author argues that they not only explore questions of political action in their plots but also reconstruct, by reconvening, a radical audience that had been virtually eliminated in England during the period of the counterrevolutionary and Napoleonic wars.Like the radical culture of the 1790's, Byron and Shelley's plays are informed by a "new" politics of language. Focusing on the discursive conditions of radical culture and the plays, and bringing the procedures of cultural materialism into contact with those of deconstruction, the author highlights the political and literary operation of the plays' language. In the process, he shows how the plays contributed to the recrudescence of a polite radicalism that sought to align itself with and establish control over its plebeian counterpart.Detailed discussion of individual plays—Manfred, Sardanapalus, Prometheus Unbound, Marino Faliero, Hellas, Cain, Heaven and Earth, The Two Foscari, and The Cenci—is supported by investigations into Romantic criticism of the drama, the dynamics of the reviewing journals, and the philosophical construct of the "closet" of reasoning and reading.

This collection of documents, some half of which are from American sources, traces the relationship between the Royal Navy and the United States Navy, the British Admiralty and the US Department of the Navy and the British and United States governments on naval matters from before America's entry into the Great War in 1917 until the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. The 'pacific' President Wilson's decision to declare war on Germany on 6 April 1917 became inevitable once Germany resumed unrestricted submarine warfare on all neutral and Allied shipping. That gamble was based on the belief that Britain would be starved into surrender before America's vast resources could be mobilised. It very nearly succeeded. When America entered the war, U-boats were sinking one in every four ocean-going vessels clearing British ports and in April 1917 alone almost 900,000 tons of Allied and neutral shipping was lost. Britain was down to just a few weeks supply of grain and the Grand Fleet was reduced to steaming at half speed for want of fuel oil. Clearly the priority was to counter the U-boats but, despite ample evidence of its effectiveness in specific cases, introduction of a convoy system was opposed by both navies on the grounds that it was a defensive policy which would not result in increased U-boat sinkings. Once introduced in May 1917, it proved an immediate success, both dramatically reducing losses and increasing U-boat losses. However, despite preliminary discussions prior to the US declaration of war, driven notably by the then Assistant Secretary of the Navy and future President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Anglophile Ambassador to Britain Walter Hines Page, the US Navy was woefully unprepared for war and, at least initially, more of a drain on allied resources than an asset. Moreover, while the Admiralty made desperate pleas for the smaller craft needed to counter U-boats in the Western Approaches, Washington continued to pursue a capital ship building programme and to retain submarine counter measure vessels on America's Eastern seaboard, despite little or no evidence of U-boat activity in those waters. And while a close and successful partnership developed at sea from the outset, suspicion and rivalry underlay the wider relationship and rapidly resurfaced once the guns fell silent, due in no small part to pronounced Anglophobia at higher levels in the US Navy. The papers are divided into nine sections, each with its own introduction, and cover preliminary discussions before America's declaration of war; integration of the two navies' activities while staving off defeat by the U-boats; the gradual development of a harmonious working relationship as America's commitment to the war increased; and the last year of the war in which the relationship came to fruition. Subsequent sections then deal with more specific topics: the submarine war; US battleships in European waters; the North Sea mine barrier; the Mediterranean; the Western Atlantic and the Caribbean; and finally the naval armistice and the Peace Treaty.
