This book is the first volume of the SpringerBriefs in the Mathematics of Materials and provides a comprehensive guide to the interaction of mathematics with materials science. The anterior part of the book describes a selected history of materials science as well as the interaction between mathematics and materials in history. The emergence of materials science was itself a result of an interdisciplinary movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Materials science was formed by the integration of metallurgy, polymer science, ceramics, solid state physics, and related disciplines. We believe that such historical background helps readers to understand the importance of interdisciplinary interaction such as mathematics–materials science collaboration. The middle part of the book describes mathematical ideas and methods that can be applied to materials problems and introduces some examples of specific studies—for example, computational homology applied to structural analysis of glassy materials, stochastic models for the formation process of materials, new geometric measures for finite carbon nanotube molecules, mathematical technique predicting a molecular magnet, and network analysis of nanoporous materials. The details of these works will be shown in the subsequent volumes of this SpringerBriefs in the Mathematics of Materials series by the individual authors. The posterior section of the book presents how breakthroughs based on mathematics–materials science collaborations can emerge. The authors' argument is supported by the experiences at the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR), where many researchers from various fields gathered and tackled interdisciplinary research.

The contributions address subjects in defect dynamics, negatively curved carbon crystal, topological analysis of di-block copolymers, persistence modules, and fracture dynamics. These papers highlight the strong interaction between mathematics and materials science and also reflect the activity of WPI-AIMR at Tohoku University, in which collaborations between mathematicians and experimentalists are actively ongoing.

The first Seasonal Institute of the Mathematical Society of Japan (MSJ-SI) “Probabilistic Approach to Geometry” was held at Kyoto University, Japan, on 28th July 2008 - 8th August, 2008. The conference aimed to make interactions between Geometry and Probability Theory and seek for new directions of those research areas. This volume contains the proceedings, selected research articles based on the talks, including survey articles on random groups, rough paths, and heat kernels by the survey lecturers in the conference. Contains the proccedings of a conference on Operator Algebras and Mathematical Physics, held at Tohoku University in 2016. Researchers gave lectures on a wide range of topics on operator algebras and their applications to mathematical physics. This volume contains one survey article and 11 research articles based on the lectures given.

The two symposia, the Hayashibara Forum and the MSJ/IHÉS joint workshop, were held at the Institute des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS) in November, 2006. The Hayashibara Forum focused on singularity theory, which has been one of the research areas that has over the years been well represented at IHÉS. The MSJ/IHÉS Joint Workshop, focused on the broad area of noncommutativity, with an emphasis on noncommutative geometry as one of the fundamental themes of 21st century mathematics. This volume contains papers presented at the symposia in the form of invited lectures and contributing talks by young researchers. We believe that the scope of this volume well reflects a new development for singularity theory, and a new direction in mathematics through noncommutativity.
