Brought together for the first time - the seminal writing on architecture by key philosophers and cultural theorist of the twentieth century.Issues around the built environment are increasingly central to the study of the social sciences and humanities. The essays offer a refreshing take on the question of architecture and provocatively rethink many of the accepted tenets of architecture theory from a broader cultural perspective. The book represents a careful selection of the very best theoretical writings on the ideas which have shaped our cities and our experiences of architecture. As such, Rethinking Architecture provides invaluable core source material for students on a range of courses.

Architecture and Revolution explores the consequences of the 1989 revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe from an architectural perspective. It presents new writings from a team of renowned architects, philosophers and cultural theorists from both the East and the West. They explore the questions over the built environment that now face architects, planners and politicians in the region. They examine the problems of buildings inherited from the communist era: some are environmentally inadequate, many were designed to serve a now redundant social programme and others carry the stigma of association with previous regimes. Contributors include: Daniel Libeskind, Bernard Tschumi, Laura Mulvey, Helene Cixous, Andrew Benjamin and Frederic Jameson.

'Spatial images', wrote the German cultural theorist, Siegfried Kracauer, 'are the dreams of society. Wherever the hieroglyphics of any spatial image are deciphered, there the basis of social reality presents itself.' But how exactly are these spatial images to be deciphered? Hieroglyphics of Space addresses this question with a series of insightful essays on some of the great metropolitan centres of the world. From political interpretations to gendered analyses, from methods of mapping to filmic representations, and from studies in consumption to economic surveys, the volume offers a range of strategies for reading and experiencing the modern metropolis.

The AI revolution is here. Now that AI has been unleashed, nothing will be the same again. But what will be the impact of AI on architectural design? The AI Design Revolution offers an accessible and engaging introduction to the relevance of artificial intelligence to architecture and how it is transforming the field. The book brings together four of the world’s leading experts on AI and architecture: Neil Leach, Wanyu He, Daniel Bolojan, and Theodoros Galanos. Together they look at the impact of AI on architecture, each from their own perspective, to offer a comprehensive overview of how AI is already leading to a profound and deep-rooted revolution in architectural design. This is essential reading for students of architecture and professional architects alike.

AI has been unleashed. Nothing is going to be the same again.Updated to cover all the latest developments, Architecture in the Age of Artificial Intelligence introduces AI for designers and explores its seismic impact on the future of architecture and design. From ChatGPT and smart assistants to groundbreaking diffusion models for video and 3D modelling, this updated new edition investigates the profound effects of AI technologies on architectural practice. It explores how AI transforms every part of the process—from the inspiration and brief, to regulations and copyright, to performance-driven design— and looks beyond discussions of software and functionality to ask more fundamental questions too: How did AI evolve? How does it work? What does it tell us about creativity? And what does it mean for the very future of the profession itself? Written by one of the world’s leading experts in the field, this book is a must-read for all architects wishing to stay at the forefront of the AI revolution.

Some architects dream of 3D-printing houses. Some even fantasise about 3D-printing entire cities. But what is the real potential of 3D printing for architects? This issue focuses on another strand of 3D-printing practice emerging among architects operating at a much smaller scale that is potentially more significant. Several architects have been working with the fashion industry to produce some exquisitely designed 3D-printed wearables. Other architects have been 3D-printing food, jewellery and other items at the scale of the human body. But what is the significance of this work? And how do these 3D-printed body-scale items relate to the discipline of architecture? Are they merely a distraction from the real business of the architect? Or do they point towards a new form of proto-architecture – like furniture, espresso makers and pavilions before them – that tests out architectural ideas and explores tectonic properties at a smaller scale? Or does this work constitute an entirely new arena of design? In other words, is 3D printing at the human scale to be seen as a new genre of 'body architecture'? This issue contains some of the most exciting work in this field today, and seeks to chart and analyse its significance.Contributors include: Paola Antonelli/MoMA, Francis Bitonti, Niccolo Casas, Behnaz Farahi, Madeline Gannon, Eric Goldemberg/MONAD Studio, Kyle von Hasseln/3D Systems Culinary Lab, Rem D Koolhaas, Julia Kӧrner, Neil Leach, Steven Ma/Xuberance, Neri Oxman/MIT Media Lab, Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello, Gilles Retsin, Jessica Rosenkrantz/Nervous System, and Patrik Schumacher/Zaha Hadid Architects.
