This practical and informative text lays out the product of a number of years of clinical research into suicide behaviour and its prevention. While the focus is on non-affective psychosis and the schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, the mechanisms underlying suicide behaviour in this group may well underlie or at least influence suicide behaviour in other disorders. The authors describe methods of assessment through individual formulation, and a cognitive behavioural intervention through case studies, to reduce the risk of suicide. This book argues that:· Suicide behaviour lies on a cognitive-behavioural continuum from ideation, through intention to action. · Mechanisms based on biased information processing systems, the development of suicide schema, and appraisal styles are likely to be fruitful in explaining suicidal thoughts and behaviours.· A psychological theory of suicide behaviour is needed in order to develop a mechanism of suicide and to understand the components of suicidal thoughts and behaviours.· Suicide risk can be reduced through the use of the intervention methods described within the textCognitive Behavioural Prevention of Suicide in Psychosis evaluates practical applications of contemporary research on this topic, and will therefore be of interest to practitioners, post-graduates in training, and researchers studying suicide and/or psychosis.

Treating individuals with a substance misuse problem can be challenging, especially if clients present with multiple problems related to the main addiction. Clinicians can feel at a loss as to where to begin, or revert to an attempt to treat underlying problems - ignoring damaging aspects of the substance misuse itself. At times referral to specialists may seem the only responsible way forward. Written by a team of clinical academics in the field of addictions, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy in the Treatment of Addictions is a ready reference for clinicians that offers a brief, evidence-based, collaborative approach that starts here and now. Client and therapist embark together on a journey to tackle the problem in a practical way. The book includes session tools, worksheets and daily thought records.

Treating Complex Cases: The Cognitive Behavioural Therapy ApproachPatients with complex problems, including co-morbidity, chronic conditions, enduring vulnerabilities, psychotic conditions, persistent difficulties with social relationships and destabilizing social environments, are increasingly recognised as the reality ofthe therapist's case load. The cognitive behavioural caseformulation approach can be particularly suited to the treatment of such complex cases. This book brings together some of the most experienced and expert cognitive behavioural therapists to share their specialist experience of formulation and treatment of these complex cases. The experienced clinician will find in these accounts: Evidence-based approaches to assessment and formulation of complex casesA wide range of problems not restricted to disorder categories, including anger, low self-esteem, abuse and shameA concern with the realities of clinical practice which involves complex cases that do not fit neatly into simple case conceptualisations or diagnostic categoriesMany of these chapters highlight the difficulties and complexitiesencountered by the clinician in conceptualising and treating these cases. However, they go beyond raising awareness of issues and provide, where appropriate, specific guidance on dealing withproblems of engagement, socialisation, and implementation of treatment in complex cases.
