The idea of keeping secrets, both on the part of individuals and on the part of governments, came to be viewed with more suspicion as the century progressed. By the eve of the French Revolution, writers voicing concerns about corruption saw secrecy as part and parcel of despotism, and this shift went hand in hand with the rise of the idea of transparency. The author argues that the emphasis placed on government transparency, especially the mania for transparency that dominated the French Revolution, resulted from the surprising connections and confluence of changing attitudes towards honour, religious movements, rising nationalism, literature, and police practices. Exploring religious ideas that associated secrecy with darkness and wickedness, and proto-nationalist discourse that equated foreignness with secrecy, this book demonstrates how cultural shifts in eighteenth-century France influenced its politics. Covering the period of intense fear during the French Revolution and the paranoia of the Reign of Terror, the book highlights the complex interplay of culture and politics and provides insights into our attitudes towards secrecy today.

Whenever people from different cultural and religious backgrounds converge, it produces tension and ambivalence. This study delves into conflicts in interreligious educational processes in both theory and practice, presenting the results of empirical research conducted at schools and universities and formulating ground-breaking practical perspectives for interreligious collaboration in various religious-pedagogical settings.

Immer wenn Menschen mit unterschiedlichen kulturellen und religiösen Hintergründen aufeinandertreffen, ergeben sich manifeste wie latente Konfliktpotentiale und Ambivalenzen. Diese sind der religiösen Vielfalt moderner europäischer Gesellschaften eingeschrieben, werden aber zumeist negativ bewertet. Konflikte können jedoch auch eine positive Funktion haben: als wichtige Indikatoren für Veränderungsmöglichkeiten. Der Band widmet sich auftretenden Konflikten und Konfliktdynamiken in interreligiösen Bildungsprozessen. Diese wurden an den exemplarischen Schauplätzen Schule und Universität beforscht sowie wegweisende religionspädagogische Einsichten und praktische Perspektiven für die interreligiöse Zusammenarbeit in unterschiedlichen Settings formuliert.

Die land- und forstwirtschaftliche Produktion ist längst nicht mehr überall rentabel. Staatliche Subventionen werden gekürzt, Naturschutzverbände plädieren für den «unterlassenden Naturschutz» und die Einrichtung neuer Schutz- und «Wildnis» gebiete. Es muss nun also entschieden werden, welche Flächen weiter bewirtschaftet und welche aufgegeben und der Verwilderung überlassen werden. In diesem Zusammenhang wird seit einiger Zeit in der Schweiz vermehrt über «Wildnis» diskutiert. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Debatte untersucht die Autorin die Einstellungen der Schweizer Bevölkerung zu Natur, Wildnis und Verwilderung. Laut einer repräsentativen Befragung kann die Schweizer Bevölkerung in vier Typen eingeteilt werden: die «naturverbundenen Naturnutzer», die «distanzierten Natursympathisanten», die «anthropozentrischen Naturbeeinflusser» und die «Naturliebhaber». Bei allen vier Typen lassen sich unterschiedliche Einstellungen zu Wildnis und Verwilderung feststellen, und sie machen unterschiedliche Gründe geltend, Wildnis abzulehnen oder zu befürworten. Die Autorin geht auch auf die Wünsche und Ansprüche der Bevölkerung an Wildnisgebiete ein und gibt Empfehlungen für die Ausweisung von neuen Schutzgebieten.

In einer stark vom Menschen geprägten Natur kommt Wildnis eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Auch in der Schweiz ist der Druck auf Wildnis gross: Insbesondere Infrastruktur für Tourismus und Energiegewinnung gefährdet die letzten unberührten Gebiete. Gleichzeitig entwickeln sich aufgrund der Landnutzungsaufgabe gewisse Täler hin Richtung Wildnis. Vor diesem Hintergrund zeigt die vorliegende Studie auf, wo sich in der Schweiz Flächen mit hoher Wildnisqualität befinden. Zudem untersucht sie Argumente für und gegen Wildnis bei der lokalen Bevölkerung und kantonalen Fachpersonen.Die Studie zeigt, dass rund 17 Prozent der Schweizer Landesfläche eine hohe Wildnisqualität bewahrt haben, weil sie naturnah, abgelegen, kaum erschlossen und wenig genutzt sind sowie meist in steilem Gelände liegen. Es wird auch deutlich, dass die lokale Bevölkerung oft keinen Widerspruch zwischen Wildnis und freier Naturentwicklung sowie der Nutzung natürlicher Ressourcen sieht. Wildnis hat vor allem dort eine Chance, wo sich landschaftsökologisches und gesellschaftliches Potenzial decken.
