This book contains the refereed and edited versions of papers presented at the IUTAM Symposium on Topological Design Optimization of Structures, - chines and Materials: Status and Perspectives, held at Rungstedgaard, near Copenhagen, Denmark, October 26–29, 2005. The symposium was attended by 74 scientists from 19 countries, and the programme was intensive and - cluded also two evenings for presentations and discussions. It is now more than 15 years ago that the so-called homogenization method was proposed as a basis for computational means to optimize the topology and shape of continuum structures. From initially being capable mainly of treating minimum compliance design we now see the basic material distribution idea of the methodology applied to a wide range of structural and mechanical pr- lems as well as to problems that couple structural response to other physical responses. Also, the method has provided insight for micro-mechanical st- ies, meaning that the method has given feedback to the area which provided impetus to the ?eld of topological design optimization in its creation. Finally, topological design is now an integral part of most FEM software systems and it has become a standard industrial tool in some ?elds. The IUTAM Symposium provided a forum for the exchange of ideas for - ture developments in the area of topological design optimization. This enc- passed the application to ?uid-solid interaction problems, acoustics problems, and to problems in biomechanics, as well as to other multiphysics problems.

Theoretical and Applied Mechanics covers the proceedings of the 16th International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, held at the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, Denmark on August 19-25, 1984. The contributors consider the significant advances in the thriving field of mechanics. This book is composed of 21 chapters, and begins with an overview of space research contributions in understanding fluid media mechanics. This topic is followed by discussions on some aspects and fundamentals of mechanics, such as chaos, computer application, resonant phenomena, adiabaticity, and nonlinear acoustics. The following chapters explore the various applications of theoretical and applied mechanics, including in marine structures, oil recovery, and ice and snow mechanics. This book also deals with nonlinear wave motion, hydrodynamic systems, ocean wave spectra, and Helmholtz concept. The remaining chapters look into the issues of steady water bifurcation, concept of anisotropic soils, and flow visualization. This book is of great value to physicists and research workers who wish to expand their knowledge in mechanics.

Covering a range of topics in engineering optimization, concerning research procedures and applications, this book may also contribute new ideas and concepts in a world of ever-decreasing natural resources and an ever-increasing demand for lighter yet stronger and safer technical components. The contributions can be grouped under the following five main topics: shape and layout optimization, structural optimization with advanced materials, optimal designs with special structural and material behaviour, sensitivity program systems and optimization with stability constraints and special problems. This book of proceedings on mechanical engineering, civil engineering, off-shore engineering, applied mathematics, engineering design and computational mechanics is intended for engineers and advanced students.

In view of the growing importance of product liability and the demand for fulfillment of extreme specifications for new products, this book provides the basic tools for establishing model equations in structural mechanics. Additionally, it illustrates the transition and interrelation between structural mechanics and structural optimization. Nowadays, this new direction is extremely important for more efficiency in the design process. The book is divided into four parts covering the fundamentals of elasticity, plane and curved load-bearing structures and structural optimization. Each part contains numerous problems and solutions, which will provide the student with the basic tools from the field of elasticity theory and assist the professional engineer in solving problems.

These proceedings contain the texts of 37 contributions presented at the International Conference on Engineering Optimization in an Industrial Environment, which took place on 3 - 4 September 1990 at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Hesearch Center, I~H Germany. The presentations consisted of oral and poster contributions arranged in five sessions: • Shape and layout optimization • Structural optimization with advanced materials • Optimal designs with special structural and material beha viour • Sensitivity analysis - Programme systems • Optimization with stability constraints - Special problems The editors wish to express their appreciation to all authors and invited speakers for their in teresting contributions. The proceedings cover a wide range of topics in structural optimization representing the present state of the art in the fields of research and in the industrial environment as well. The editors hope that this book will also contribute towards new ideas and concepts in a world of ever decreasing natural resources and ever increasing demands for lighter and yet stronger and safer technical components. I"inally, the editors wish to thank all colleagues who helped in the organisation of the conference, especially Mrs. E. Schroder anq Dr. K.llethge, as well as Mr. A. von lIagen and Mrs. E. Haufelder, Springer Publishing Company, Heidelberg for the good cooperation and help in the publication of these proceedings.
