Das Buch untersucht die Frage, wie räumliche Verortung individuelle Bildungs- und Erwerbschancen beeinflusst. Es verknüpft soziologische Raumtheorien, Theorien sozialer Kontexte, lebenslaufsoziologische Theorien und Ansätze der sozialen Ungleichheitsforschung und erklärt, wie geografischer Raum Zugangsmöglichkeiten, Ressourcenverteilungen und Handlungsspielräume von Individuen strukturiert. Im Fokus stehen drei Schlüsselbereiche: 1. Rechtsnormen und Politik, 2. soziales Kapital und Netzwerke, 3. ökonomische Strukturen und Märkte. Empirisch wird gezeigt, dass räumliche Variationen in den Bildungsgesetzen und -vorschriften, im Umfang und in der Ausgestaltung der formalen Bildungsangebote, in der sozialen Zusammensetzung der Sozialkapitalbestände sowie in den Marktlagen zu differentiellen Bildungs- und Erwerbschancen beitragen. Da insbesondere territoriale Räume potentiell veränderbar sind, können politisch-administrative Entscheidungsträger Verantwortlichkeiten besser erkennen und bei Fehlentwicklungen intervenieren.
