This book examines smart cities through the lens of the information and communication technology (ICT)-driven transformation of the economy and economic systems and the resulting changes influencing organizations (public, private, and voluntary) and citizens in the smart city. In this context, the chapters included in this book address very specific questions pertaining to modes and models of economic collaboration, interest aggregation, and determinants of sustainable growth and development in the smart city. To this end, the circular economy, the sharing economy, the platform economy, and open innovation in the smart city are discussed. The notions of economic performance, competition, and business model innovation (BMI) are elaborated in detail. Finally, the question of the fragility of labor markets, including the availability of talent, is explored. By applying conceptually sound, inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches, frequently including case studies, this book provides a thorough insight into the complex question of how tools specific to the fields of economics, business management, innovation management, strategic management, entrepreneurship, and human resource management can be useful in view of understanding and harnessing the intrusion of ICT in the city space.

This book explores how AI and Generative AI (GenAI) are shaping contemporary societies. It examines the mechanisms through which they influence politics and governance, and sectors such as education and business, with a focus on their alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Leading experts provide a variety of complementary perspectives on the influence of AI in both public and private sectors. Chapters are organized into three thematic parts, investigating regulatory frameworks, the transformation of higher education and practical applications across industries, such as healthcare and agriculture, with detailed case studies bridging viewpoints from the Global North and South. The book further demonstrates how actionable insights, such as decentralization and Web3, technologies can create a roadmap for aligning AI with ethical principles and ensure equitable distribution of the benefits it bears.Scholars and students of business, business ethics, education policy, disruptive technologies and AI will greatly benefit from this comprehensive book. It is also a crucial resource for practitioners and policymakers working in public policy, administration and management, as well as regulation and governance and general SDGs.

Big data and its accompanying technological ecosystems have had a dramatic impact on business, politics and society. At the same time, the very nature of big data, a term that originates from computer science discourse, often remains opaque to research communities in other disciplines as well as to practitioners. Considering the pervasive impact of big data across a number of issues and domains, clearer insight into its functions and practical application is needed.Through a unique blend of case studies and critical analysis, Big Data and Decision-Making: Applications and Uses in the Public and Private Sector examines how big data influences contemporary societies in decision-making processes, strategy setting and overall performance. Covering topics ranging from data privacy to AI, big data in healthcare, SMEs, tourism and smart cities, contributors offer a critical appraisal of lessons learnt in the process of harnessing the promise inherent in big data.Big Data and Decision-Making: Applications and Uses in the Public and Private Sector breaks down the concept of big data to reveal how it has become integrated into the fabric of both public and private domains, as well as how its value can ultimately be exploited. To this end, its contributors call for the building of bridges between the computer science-driven debate on big data and research taking place in social sciences and management.

This book adopts the managerial perspective to the study of smart cities. As such, this book is a necessary addition to the existing body of literature on smart cities. The chapters included in this book prove the case that transformation of cities to smart cities is a function of effective and efficient management practices implemented at diverse levels of smart cities. While advances in information and communication technology (ICT) are crucial, it is the ability to apply ICT consciously and efficiently that drives the transformation of cities to smart cities in a manner conducive to cities’ sustainability and resilience. The book covers three sets of interconnected topics:Management and decision-making for urban design and infrastructure developmentManagement and decision-making in context of smart cities developmentWays of promoting and ensuring participation, representation and co-creation in smart cities These three groups of topics offer a great opportunity to acquire a clear, direct, and practice-driven knowledge and understanding of how effective management allows ICT-enhanced tools and applications to change smart cities, possibly making them smarter.

This book features research presented and discussed during the Research and Innovation Forum (Rii Forum) 2025. As such, this book offers a unique insight into emerging topics, issues and developments pertinent to the fields of technology, innovation and education and their social impact. Papers included in this book apply inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches to query such issues as technology-enhanced teaching and learning, smart cities, information systems, cognitive computing and social networking. What brings these threads of the discussion together is the question of how advances in computer science—which are otherwise largely incomprehensible to researchers from other fields—can be effectively translated and capitalized on so as to make them beneficial for society as a whole. In this context, Rii Forum and Rii Forum proceedings offer an essential venue where diverse stakeholders, including academics, the think tank sector and decision-makers, can engage in a meaningful dialogue with a view to improving the applicability of advances in computer science.
