Measuring Precipitation from Space presents state-of-the-art rainfall estimation algorithms, validation strategies, precipitation modelling, and assimilation in numerical weather prediction models. Throughout the world cotton is broadly adapted to growing in temperate, sub-tropical, and tropical environments, but growth may be challenged by future climate change. Production may be directly affected by changes in crop photosynthesis and water use due to rising CO2 and changes in regional temperature patterns. Indirect effects may result from a range of government regulations aimed at climate change mitigation. While there is certainty that future climate change will impact cotton production systems; there will be opportunities to adapt. This review begins to provide details for the formation of robust frameworks to evaluate the impact of projected climatic changes, highlight the risks and opportunities with adaptation, and details the approaches for investment in research. Ultimately, it is a multi-faceted systems-based approach that combines all elements of the cropping system that will provide the best insurance to harness the change that is occurring, and best allow cotton industries worldwide to adapt. Given that there will be no single solution for all of the challenges raised by climate change and variability, the best adaptation strategy for industry will be to develop more resilient systems. Early implementation of adaptation strategies, particularly in regard to enhancing resilience, has the potential to significantly reduce the negative impacts of climate change now and in the future.

Der vorliegende Band fasst die Ergebnisse eines zweitagigen Symposions "Multiple Hypothesenprufung" am 6. und 7. November 1987 in Gerolstein/ Eifel zusammen. Das Problem der multiplen Hypothesenprufung stellt sich immer dann, wenn aufgrund eines statistischen Experimentes mehrere Fragestellungen beantwortet werden sollen. Insbesondere innerhalb biologisch-medizi- nischer Studien sind haufig mehrere Behandlungen, mehrere Zielgrossen oder Messungen zu mehreren Zeitpunkten zu beurteilen. In der Vergangenheit wurde dem Problem der Multiplizitat der Fragestel- lungen nicht genugend Beachtung geschenkt. Im deutschsprachigen Raum erschien dieses Thema etwa ab Ende der 70er Jahre vermehrt auf Kongres- sen sowie in Veroffentlichungen, ausgelost durch die Arbeiten von MARCUS, PERITZ und GABRIEL (1976) und HOLM (1979). Besonders durch das Schwerpunkuhema "Simultane Hypothesenprufung" und die gemein- same Publikation der Referate im Rahmen des Biometrischen Seminars im Jahre 1981 in Bad Ischl, Osterreich, wurde die Aufmerksamkeit vieler Biometriker auf neuere Entwicklungen in diesem fur die Anwendung so wichtigen Bereich gelenkt.In der Folge kam es zu einer intensiven For- schungstatigkeit an den verschiedensten Stellen, vorwiegend von Biometr- kern und von Statistikern mit engem Verhaltnis zur Biometrie. Es war daher naheliegend zu versuchen, die in diesem Bereich methodisch tatigen Biometriker und Statistiker zu einem intensiven Meinungsaus- tausch zusammenzubringen. Dabei sollte eine Bestandsaufnahme vorge- nommen und uber die Richtung weiterer Entwicklungen diskutiert werden. Schon wahrend des Symposions wurde von emlgen Teilnehmern der Vor- schlag gemacht, den Tagungsband in englischer Sprache abzufassen, um IV den Ergebnissen international eine grossere Verbreitung zu ermoglichen.

Many of the research workers who have been concerned with both probability and statistics felt the need for meetings that provide an opportunity for personal con­ tacts among scholars whose fields of specialization cover broad spectra in both statistics and probability: to discuss major open problems and new solutions, and to provide encouragement for further research through the lectures of carefully selected scholars, moreover to introduce to younger colleagues the latest research techniques and thus to stimulate their interest in research. To meet these goals, the series of Pannonian Symposia on Mathematical Statistics was organized, beginning in the year 1979: the first, second and fourth one in Bad Tatzmannsdorf, Burgenland, Austria, the third and fifth in Visegrad, Hungary. The Sixth Pannonian Symposium was held in Bad Tatzmannsdorf again, in the time between 14 and 20 September 1986, under the auspices of Dr. Heinz FISCHER, Federal Minister of Science and Research, Theodor KERY, President of the State Government of Burgenland, Dr. Franz SAUERZOPF, Vice-President of the State Govern­ ment of Burgenland and Dr. Josef SCHMIDL, President of the Austrian Sta­ tistical Central Office. The members of the Honorary Committee were Pal ERDOS, WXadisXaw ORLICZ, Pal REVESz, Leopold SCHMETTERER and Istvan VINCZE; those of the Organizing Committee were Wilfried GROSSMANN (Uni­ versity of Vienna), Franz KONECNY (University of Agriculture of Vienna) and, as the chairman, Wolfgang WERTZ (Technical University of Vienna).
