Fully revised and updated, this new edition contains enhanced texts and sections on:environmental issues and the World Commission on Damspartially saturated soils, small amenity dams, tailing dams, upstream dam face protection and the rehabilitation of embankment damsRCC dams and the upgrading of masonry and concrete damsflow over stepped spillways and scour in plunge poolscavitation, aeration and vibration of gatesrisk analysis and contingency planning in dam safetysmall hydroelectric power development and tidal and wave powerwave statistics, pipeline stability, wave–structure interaction and coastal modellingcomputational models in hydraulic engineering. The book's key topics are explored in two parts - dam engineering and other hydraulic structures – and the text concludes with a chapter on models in hydraulic engineering. Worked numerical examples supplement the main text and extensive lists of references conclude each chapter. Hydraulic Structures provides advanced students with a solid foundation in the subject and is a useful reference source for researchers, designers and other professionals.

On its polemical side, this work argues against the computationalism of Jerry Fodor, against the behavioural holism of Willard Quine, and against the emergentist and externalist pragmatic realism of Hilary Putnam, to the more general conclusion that analytic philosophy of mind and meaning has cut itself off from the classical tradition of, among others, Locke and Descartes, whose positions did not suffer from the problems besetting these analytic trends. On its positive side, the text offers a theory of mind, meaning and knowledge in the classical tradition. An account of a priori synthetic and a priori analytic knowledge is used to set up a formal system in which modal properties of propositions (such as necessity, possibility, and so forth) can be naturally construed, including the modalities of conditionals and the validity of argument. The author raises the question of the biological implementation of the mind, as a symbolic system, and puts forward the conjecture that mental symbols are implemented in the brain at the genetic level, as patterns of gene expression within certain neural cells.Audience: The book will be of interest to philosophers of mind and meaning, cognitive scientists, logicians, biologists of cognition, linguists, and generally to students of mind and rational processes.

Mental Symbols is an essay on mind and meaning, on the biological implementation of mental symbols, on the architecture of mind, and on the correct construal of logical properties and relations of symbols, including implication and inference. The book argues against the main contemporary trends in the cognitive sciences, preferring rather the classical early-modern tradition. The author looks at some logical paradoxes in the light of that tradition, and offers a novel answer to the problem of the biological implementation of the mind in the brain.
