René Magritte: Beyond painting offers a rethinking of Magritte’s art from a position informed by contemporary developments in art theory.The book employs a wide range of literary and philosophical/cultural theoretical frameworks to analyse Magritte’s art. It offers close readings of specific images, paying attention to neglected aspects of Magritte’s work, discussing the significance of cabinets of curiosities and encyclopaedias, trompe l’oeil, framing and forgeries. It addresses a range of intertextual relations between Magritte’s work and that of other Surrealist artists and the art-historical tradition. This book explores how Magritte’s art challenges conventional notions of originality, canonicity and coherence, revealing his work as being shaped by co-operations and co-options. It demonstrates that uncertainty, incoherence and negation lie at the core of Magritte’s oeuvre.

Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material – many images reproduced for the first time – alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.

Chapters address artworks, writings and compositions by the Swiss Meret Oppenheim, the German Unica Zürn, the Austrian Birgit Jürgenssen, the Luxembourg-Austrian Bady Minck and the Austrian Olga Neuwirth and her collaboration with fellow Austrian Nobel-prize winning novelist Elfriede Jelinek. Locating each artist in their historical context, the book traces the development of the traumatic surreal through the wartime and post-war period.

Passage Works is the first book-length English language critical analysis of the transdisciplinary work of the Austrian film-maker, writer, and artist Ruth Beckermann (b. 1952, Vienna). Beckermann’s works interrogate identity and geography as formations of the intersections between the past and the contemporary.
