Versuche, mittels rationaler Planung die kapitalistischen Länder "einzuholen und zu überholen", waren bereits zwei Jahrzehnte zuvor gescheitert. Planwirtschaftliche Modelle schienen für immer abgeschrieben, hatten sie sich doch in der Praxis als ökonomisch undurchführbar und politisch repressiv erwiesen. Allerdings ist eine Beschäftigung mit der Idee einer geplanten sozialistischen Wirtschaft und ihren theoretischen Grundlagen heute aktueller denn je. Denn das Hohelied des freien Marktes verhallt nun schneller, als von den Nutznießern des Kapitalismus befürchtet. Die Wirtschaftskrise 2008, erzwungene Migrations- und Fluchtbewegungen, zunehmende soziale Verwerfungen und nicht zuletzt die ökologische Katastrophe und ihre dramatischen Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit des Menschen haben zu einer Krise in Permanenz geführt, der mit marktwirtschaftlichen Methoden offensichtlich nicht beizukommen ist. Ob bei den CO2-Budgets, der Impfstoffproduktion oder der Bereitstellung von Atemwegsmasken: Immer öfter war zuletzt, nicht nur im angelsächsischen Raum, von Sozialismus, Planwirtschaft oder zumindest planning die Rede.Für die Herausgeber Philip Broistedt und Christian Hofmann ist Planwirtschaft weder ein selbsterklärender noch ein originär linker Begriff. In ihrer Textsammlung dokumentieren sie zentrale Debatten darüber, wie eine geplante Wirtschaft an die Stelle der anarchischen Produktion auf Basis des Marktes treten könnte.
