Routledge Applied Linguistics is a series of comprehensive textbooks, providing students and researchers with the support they need for advanced study in the core areas of English language and Applied Linguistics. Each book in the series guides readers through three main sections, enabling them to explore and develop major themes within the discipline. Section A, Introduction, establishes the key terms and concepts and extends readers’ techniques of analysis through practical application. Section B, Extension, brings together influential articles, sets them in context, and discusses their contribution to the field. Section C, Exploration, builds on knowledge gained in the first two sections, setting thoughtful tasks around further illustrative material. This enables readers to engage more actively with the subject matter and encourages them to develop their own research responses. Throughout the book, topics are revisited, extended, interwoven and deconstructed, with the reader’s understanding strengthened by tasks and follow-up questions.Research Methods for Applied Language Studies:Provides an advanced introduction to quantitative and qualitative research methods used in second and foreign language learning, teaching and assessmentTakes readers step by step through the processes of research, from formulating research questions to writing up a dissertation or report.Employs a wide variety of carefully structured tasks and discussion points to guide the reader through the key themes, frameworks and procedures of applied language research, including ethnography, conversation analysis and quasi-experimental designs.Engages students in readings and tasks on articles from leading names in the field, including Alison Mackey, Roy Lyster, Angela Creese, Junko Mori, Rod Ellis and Diane Larsen-Freeman.Is supported by a Companion Website, including data sets for practice and guides to writing a proposal, making recordings, conducting interviews, producing questionnaires and organising a dissertation. Written by experienced teachers and researchers in the field, Research Methods for Applied Language Studies is an essential resource for students and researchers of Applied Linguistics.

The Discourse of the IELTS Speaking Test provides a unique dual perspective on the evaluation of spoken discourse in that it combines a detailed portrayal of the design of a face-to-face speaking test with its actual implementation in interactional terms. Using many empirical extracts of interaction from authentic IELTS Speaking Tests, the book illustrates how the interaction is organised in relation to the institutional aim of ensuring valid assessment. The relationship between individual features of the interaction and grading criteria is examined in detail across a number of different performance levels.

This book gathers together 11 empirical-based studies of classroom interaction carried out in different countries, including the USA, England, Kenya, Sweden, and China. Along with a state-of-the-art literature review, the chapters provide key insights and engagement priorities that will prove relevant to a variety of learning and teaching contexts.

How can you use the latest digital technology to create an environment in which people can learn European languages while performing a meaningful real-world task and experiencing the cultural aspect of learning to cook European dishes? This book explains how to do this from A to Z, covering how a real-world digital environment for language learning was designed, built and researched. The project makes language learning motivational and fun by tapping into people's interest in both cooking and technology – you can learn a language while cooking and interacting with a speaking digital kitchen. The kitchens provide spoken instructions in the foreign language on how to prepare European cuisine. Digital sensors are inserted in or attached to all the kitchen equipment and ingredients, so the digital kitchen detects what learners are doing and gives them feedback. Learners are also able to communicate with the kitchens and can ask for help via photos and videos if they don't understand any foreign language words. Based on two research grants, the book provides five research studies showing the learning experiences of users in five European countries. The book explains the principles and procedures involved in the project, enabling others to design and implement a real-world digital learning environment in the same way. It includes numerous photographs of the system in use and evidence of how and what 250 users actually learnt.

Discussing digital technology in teaching and learning settings, Video Enhanced Observation for Language Teaching explains how it can be used to tag, analyze and evaluate talk and use it as the basis for reflection and professional development.Guiding readers through these processes, this book focusses on the Video Enhanced Observation (VEO) system. Beginning with a discussion of how it was designed and built by language teaching professionals, contributors use VEO to illustrate the advantages and opportunities of digital observation technologies for teachers, explaining its use and how it can be adapted it to their own professional practice. With detailed case studies tracing how teachers in many different settings have used this system for recording, evaluating and reflecting on lessons, this book provides clear research evidence of the development of many education professionals from around the world.Written by experts in applied linguistics, education and educational technology, Video Enhanced Observation for Language Teaching explains the principles and procedures involved with using digital observation technologies in teaching, enabling other professionals to integrate these technologies into their own environment and practice.

Explaining how the cultural practices of a community can be used as the vehicle for learning its language, this book shows how two apps have been developed to deliver language learning while users are carrying out real-life cultural activities. Many people are motivated to learn foreign languages by their interest in foreign cultures, cuisines and activities such as origami, Hallowe’en pumpkins or cooking a meal from the target culture. This book shows how these motivations can be integrated into the way we learn languages using the latest digital technology: the Linguacuisine and ENACT apps.Written by experts in education, educational technology and applied linguistics, the book introduces the concept of the cultural task and provides a model, principles and procedures, enabling professionals in any area – including teachers and community workers – to adapt the apps to their own environment. Video tutorials on the accompanying website give users a hands-on introduction to using the apps and authoring their own cultural tasks in their own language for use by others. As such, the apps constitute a rich online repository of Open Educational Resources (OERs). The chapters offer in-depth descriptions of how the apps were implemented in 5 different countries, with 9 different languages and cultures, and clear research evidence of the learning of cultural practices and languages through varied data sources including photographs of app use and cultural artefacts produced by users. The editors won the 2025 ReCALL Annual Article Prize for their article Migrants’ digital skills development: Engaging with and creating digital cultural activities on the ENACT web app.

Human Spoken Interaction as a Complex Adaptive System explains how human spoken communication functions, combining two separate complex adaptive systems: the universal 'interaction engine' and language(s), which now number around 7,000. Siegel and Seedhouse offer a comprehensive overview of how the components and processes of the interaction engine work together to enable us to understand each other, whatever the language. Through combining Complexity Science and Conversation Analysis, this book explains how to simultaneously analyse spoken interaction on micro and macro scales. Detailed analyses of L2 learners reveal them to be simultaneously expert in using the interaction engine and inexpert in using the specific language. The study shows that the basic characteristics of the interaction engine are the same as for other life-related complex systems and that it is possible to access the perspectives of participants inside this complex adaptive system as it is evolving.

Winner of the MLA Kenneth W. Mildenberger Prize 2005 This monograph provides a model of the organisation of L2 classroom interaction and a practical methodology for its analysis. The main thesis is that there is a reflexive relationship between pedagogy and interaction in the L2 classroom; this relationship is the foundation of its context-free architecture. Explains the basic principles of Conversation Analysis and reviews the literature on L2 classroom interaction.Portrays the reflexive relationship between the pedagogical focus of the interaction and the organisation of turn-taking, sequence and repair.Describes the overall organisation of L2 classroom interaction and illustrates the use of the analytical methodology.Considers how Conversation Analysis can contribute to the research agendas of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition.
