Selected as one of the Books of the Century by the New York Public Library  “The brilliance, the wealth of illustration, and the aptness of personal application . . . make the reading of these chapters an exciting experience.”—W. Norman Pittenger, New York Times Book Review  “The Courage to Be changed my life. It also profoundly impacted the lives of many others from my generation. Now Harvey Cox’s fresh introduction helps to open up this powerful reading experience to the current generation.”—Robert N. Bellah, University of California, Berkeley  Originally published in 1952, The Courage to Be has become a classic of twentieth-century religious and philosophical thought. The great Christian existentialist thinker Paul Tillich describes the dilemma of modern humankind and points a way to the conquest of the problem of anxiety. This edition includes a new introduction by Harvey Cox that situates the book within the theological conversation into which it first appeared and conveys its continued relevance in the current century.

This is the first part of Paul Tillich's three-volume "Systematic Theology, " one of the most profound statements of the Christian message ever composed and the summation and definitive presentation of the theology of the most influential and creative American theologian of the twentieth century.

Although he has earned a reputation as a profound theologian, the author demonstrates in this small collection of sermons his ability to simplify the Christian message for the common reader.-BooklistThese twenty-three meditations on key passages from the Bible were originally delivered as addresses at colleges and universities. They are short, powerful, and persuasive examinations of the effect of God’s love on the life of the believer and the challenges of living the New Creation-“the infinite passion of every human being.” Tillich scholar Mary Ann Stenger provides a new introduction for this edition.

Offers anyone struggling with the existential question an introduction to the Protestant theology of Paul Tillich. The book summarizes Tillich's thought.

Dr. Tillich shows here that in spite of the contrast between philosophical and biblical language, it is neither necessary nor possible to separate them from each other. On the contrary, all the symbols used in biblical religion drive inescapably toward the philosophical quest for being. An important statement of a great theologian's position, this book presents an eloquent plea for the essential function of philosophy in religious thought.

These 16 sermons contain in concentrated form some of Tillich's most lambent themes. Although they were first published in the early 1960s, the pieces in question take up preoccupations which continue to haunt us at the beginning of the 21st century. Tillich discusses, among other topics, wisdom; salvation; loneliness and solitude; creation in relation to the creator; inequality; and spiritual presence. He has a desire to make sense of the fundamental mystery of Christian theology: the paradox of the moment which is now wherein comes the mystery which is eternity.

"A little classic," this volume from the twentieth century Christian existentialist philosopher "reveals the astounding virtuosity of the man and the thinker" (Reinhold Niebuhr, New York Times Book Review). One of the greatest books ever written on the subject, Dynamics of Faith is a primer in the philosophy of religion. Paul Tillich, a leading theologian of the twentieth century, explores the idea of faith in all its dimensions, while defining the concept in the process. This graceful and accessible volume contains a new introduction by Marion Pauck, Tillich''s biographer."A good introduction for those who would like to get acquainted with [Tillich], an important clarification of his thought for those who have struggled through his earlier books and an important essay in its own right." —Albert C. Outler"Eagerly welcomed by all serious students of man and religion." —Publishers Weekly, starred review"The best introduction to Tillich . . . a lucid exposition of the doctrine of faith as ''ultimate concern.''" –New York Times

This book presents Paul Tillich at his very best--brief, clear, stimulating, provocative. Speaking with understanding and force, he makes a basic analysis of love, power, and justice, all concepts fundamental in the mutual relations of people, of social groups, and of humankind to God. His concern is to penetrate to the essential, or ontological foundation of the meaning of each of these words and thus save them from the vague talk, idealism, cynicism, andsentimentality with which they are usually treated. The basic unity of love, power, and justice is affirmed and described in terms that are fresh and compelling.

Attempts to show the religious dimension in many special spheres of man's cultural activity.

This is the first part of Paul Tillich''s three-volume Systematic Theology, one of the most profound statements of the Christian message ever composed and the summation and definitive presentation of the theology of the most influential and creative American theologian of the twentieth century. In this path-breaking volume Tillich presents the basic method and statement of his system—his famous "correlation" of man''s deepest questions with theological answers. Here the focus is on the concepts of being and reason. Tillich shows how the quest for revelation is integral to reason itself. In the same way a description of the inner tensions of being leads to the recognition that the quest for God is implied in finite being. Here also Tillich defines his thought in relation to philosophy and the Bible and sets forth his famous doctrine of God as the "Ground of Being." Thus God is understood not as a being existing beside other beings, but as being-itself or the power of being in everything. God cannot be made into an object; religious knowledge is, therefore, necessarily symbolic.

Dr. Tillich shows here that in spite of the contrast between philosophical and biblical language, it is neither necessary nor possible to separate them from each other. On the contrary, all the symbols used in biblical religion drive inescapably toward the philosophical quest for being. An important statement of a great theologian''s position, this book presents an eloquent plea for the essential function of philosophy in religious thought.

In this volume, the third and last of his Systematic Theology, Paul Tillich sets forth his ideas of the meaning of human life, the doctrine of the Spirit and the church, the trinitarian symbols, the relation of history to the Kingdom of God, and the eschatological symbols. He handles this subject matter with powerful conceptual ability and intellectual grace. The problem of life is ambiguity. Every process of life has its contrast within itself, thus driving man to the quest for unambiguous life or life under the impact of the Spritual Presence. The Spritual Presence conquers the negativities of religion, culture, and morality, and the symbols anticipating Eternal Life present the answer to the problem of life.

'The reading of Systematic Theology can be a great voyage of discovery into a rich and deep, an inclusive and yet elaborated, vision and understanding of human life in the presence of the mystery of God' (H. Richard Niebuhr). 'The real intent and accomplishment of Dr Tillich is to show that the full truth of human existence can only be grasped through a meeting and ultimately a uniting of personal faith and rational understanding. He is interpreting the Christian faith to the mind of twentieth-century man with such penetration that the self-understanding both of the secular culture and of the Christian church is being deepened and clarified' (Daniel Day Williams). 'Tillich's Systematic Theology is beyond doubt the richest, most suggestive and most challenging philosophical theology our day has produced' (Journal of Religion).

This word for word record of a seminar in the University of California has been recognized by many reviewers as the easiest approach to Paul Tillich's often complex thought.Nor is its value only that of an introduction; those who know something of Tillich's work will find new light shed on many difficult places. As Allan Galloway put it in the Expository Times: the seminar looks for 'clarification at just those points where the average reader of Tillich is puzzled or disquieted by the novel and radical aspects of his work. So one finds that it is not other people's questions that are being answered, but one's own.' And in Education, Vernon Sproxton concluded: 'They are a tonic for anyone, and especially for teachers who have been driven to the base-line by sixth-form smashes.'

This gift from one of the greatest twentieth-century Protestant theologians, Paul Tillich, is a collection of hopeful, realistic writings on peace from the years Tillich spent in America. Beginning in 1937, the book documents Tillich's pre-World War II hope of resistance to Hitler and moves to the time before his death in 1965, when Tillich preached frequently on hope. It includes his first public political speech in America, on anti-Semitism, essays on planning for peace, and criticism of the peace thought of John Foster Dulles and Pope John XXIII.

Paul Tillich's classic work confronts the age-old question of how the moral is related to the religious. In particular, Tillich addresses the conflict between reason-determined ethics and faith-determined ethics and shows that neither is dependent on the other but that each alone is inadequate. Instead, Tillich reveals to us the gift that came with the arrival of Christ: a new reality that offers a power of being in which we can participate and out of which true thought and right action are possible. The Library of Theological Ethics series focuses on what it means to think theologically and ethically. It presents a selection of important and otherwise unavailable texts in easily accessible form. Volumes in this series will enable sustained dialogue with predecessors though reflection on classic works in the field.

Paul Tillich, one of the greatest Protestant theologians of modern times, wrote more than one hundred radio addresses that were braodcast into Nazi Germany from March 1942 through May 1944. The broadcasts were passionate and political--urging Germans to recognize the horror of Hitler and to reject a morally and spiritually bankrupt government. Laregly unknown in the United States, the broadcasts have been translated into English for the first time, and approximately half of them are presented in this book.
