It has become a near-universal assumption that Jesus was a courageous champion of Pacifism and non-violent resistance. But for many years, a few maverick scholars have made the case for Jesus having been an armed insurrectionist. This version of Jesus is the "black sheep" of gospel studies, unthinkable equally to conservative and liberal Christian scholars, who want the historical Jesus to have been a peace-loving precursor to Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A radical, even violent, Jesus is not the "personal savior" they feel comfortable following! But certain stubborn bits of evidence in the gospels continue to haunt them. Dare we set aside our sentimental views of Jesus to consider the alternative? In Not Peace but a Sword, New Testament scholar Robert M. Price carries this "Jesus the Zealot" hypothesis significantly further and asks the intellectually honest reader to take a fresh and fearless look at the surprising case for a militant Jesus.

H. P. Lovecraft was the eerily prescient genius who first electrified readers in Weird Tales magazine. His tales changed the face of horror forever and inspired the bloodcurdling offerings of a new generation. These brilliant dark visionaries forge grisly trails through previously uncharted realms of mortal terror.   THE PLAIN OF SOUND by Ramsey Campbell: In the beginning they could find no source for the throbbing vibrations; in the end they could find no escape. THE HORROR ON THE BEACH by Alan Dean Foster: Along the coast of Santa Barbara, the mighty Pacific Ocean can no longer contain—or conceal—an ancient, insatiable evil stirring in its depths. THE KISS OF BUGG-SHASH by Brian Lumley: It mattered not how innocent the students’ motives seemed; the demon had been summoned, and the price had to be paid—every last red drop of it. THE FISHERS FROM OUTSIDE by Lin Carter: A man obsessed with unlocking the secrets of a race older than time would not be disappointed—doomed perhaps, devoured possibly, but definitely not disappointed.   AND TWENTY-ONE MORE TALES OF FEAR . . .   THE STONE ON THE ISLAND by Ramsey Campbell THE STATEMENT OF ONE JOHN GIBSON by Brian Lumley DEMONIACAL by David Sutton THE SLITHERER FROM THE SLIME by H. Society and Bureaucracy in Contemporary Ghana by Robert M. Price examines the organizational dynamics of the Ghanaian civil service as a key to understanding the constraints facing postcolonial African states. Price begins with the premise that independence brought sovereignty but not unconstrained capacity for autonomous action: choice for African states was quickly tempered by economic dependency and weak internal institutions. In this context, the bureaucratic machinery of the state becomes central, both as the instrument for economic transformation and as the locus where citizens experience government. Drawing on role theory and ecological perspectives, Price argues that Ghana’s administrative system illustrates how “traditional” obligations—kinship ties, clientelism, and personalistic networks—pervade formally modern bureaucratic structures, producing a hybrid or “poly-normative” system. Through extensive surveys of civil servants and their clientele, he demonstrates how kinship obligations shape bureaucratic role performance, how corruption emerges as a patterned adaptation rather than an aberration, and how weak organizational commitment undermines both efficiency and legitimacy. The book situates the Ghanaian case within wider debates about modernization, institution building, and administrative theory. Price critiques psychological explanations of bureaucratic weakness that emphasize maladjustment, instead showing how systemic role conflicts and incongruities structure everyday administrative behavior. Detailed chapters analyze familial obligations of bureaucrats, client-service relationships, and the mechanisms of corruption, demonstrating how these are embedded in Ghana’s broader social order. He further explores how incentives, recruitment, and organizational culture shape role orientations within the civil service. The conclusion emphasizes that Ghana’s experience illustrates the vulnerability of new states: where diffuse legitimacy is lacking, the performance of bureaucracy directly affects political stability and state survival. Society and Bureaucracy in Contemporary Ghana thus advances both a rich empirical account of Ghana’s public administration and a general theoretical framework for understanding the social foundations of bureaucratic behavior in transitional societies. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. C.S. Lewis' classic The Screwtape Letters is full of keen wit and wise counsel–if one is a Christian believer. Such a reader will find much to ponder in its pages. But suppose one begins to question whether it is the voice of mature reason that Lewis portrays as the wiles of Satan? The Needletoe Letters takes the other side, depicting the letters of advice and guidance from a veteran angel to his inexperienced nephew. Their common task? To keep Christian believers hoodwinked and flummoxed! Read this book, and see if you don't begin to have second thoughts about your faith!

This book is a series of papers presented mainly at the Book of Mormon Round Table. It lays out a case for considering the Mormon scripture as the work of Joseph Smith in the nineteenth century, not an ancient document written by various Israelites in ancient America. But, author Robert M. Price argues, this is merely another case of "pseudepigraphy," the genre of fictive "as if" authorship common to the Bible as well. Price urges readers to a new appreciation of the intricate redaction and rewriting of the Bible in the Book of Mormon, and to a positive theological estimate of this approach by Latter-day Saint Christians. Critical studies of several passages in the Book of Mormon are included.

Previous commentaries on the Gospel of Thomas have tended mainly to make this intriguing text less understandable to the general reader, not less. Choking on their authors' methodology, these commentaries are more about them than the text. Robert M. Price brings striking clarity to a fascinating text, bridging the dusty centuries. Price draws on the learning of his predecessors while providing many new interpretations. Does Thomas use the canonical gospels? Or was it written earlier? Why was it excluded from the canon? Is it Gnostic? Watch out! Thomas may become your favorite gospel!

Medieval Churchmen heard the legend of Prince Siddhartha (the "Bodhisattva," or "Buddha-to-be") renouncing his wealth and seeking salvation as a monk, but they mistook it for the history of some Christian monk named "Iodasaph" (a corruption of "Bodhisattva"). Iodasaph was canonized as an official saint. The ironic result was that Gautama Buddha is a Roman Catholic saint! What if such a remarkable religious hybrid actually lived? The brief pieces collected in this book depict what he might have taught, proclaiming Buddhism from the Bible! Amazingly, it turns out not to be much of a stretch! Saint Iodasaph will have you reading familiar texts with new (third?) eyes! These vignettes originally appeared in The Christian*New Age Quarterly. One reader asked if they were genuine channeled revelations! That's high praise.

Have you ever wondered what the Apostle Paul might have said about some vital topic not mentioned in his letters? Have you wished he had clarified his views on this or that? Suppose someone discovered a cache of "new" Pauline epistles–how exciting it would be!Join New Testament scholar Robert M. Price as he presents a new collection of fourteen hitherto-unknown letters of Paul, plus a visionary apocalypse. Scholars will discover here an imaginative new approach to doing Pauline theology, and all readers will feel a thrill as they re-experience the charm of their first encounter with the now too-familiar Pauline texts of the canon.
