This book addresses a new interdisciplinary area emerging on the border between various areas of mathematics, physics, chemistry, nanotechnology, and computer science. The focus here is on problems and techniques related to graphs, quantum graphs, and fractals that parallel those from differential equations, differential geometry, or geometric analysis. Also included are such diverse topics as number theory, geometric group theory, waveguide theory, quantum chaos, quantum wire systems, carbon nano-structures, metal-insulator transition, computer vision, and communication networks. This volume contains a unique collection of expert reviews on the main directions in analysis on graphs (e.g., on discrete geometric analysis, zeta-functions on graphs, recently emerging connections between the geometric group theory and fractals, quantum graphs, quantum chaos on graphs, modeling waveguide systems and modeling quantum graph systems with waveguides, control theory on graphs), as well as research articles.

Almost ?fteen years later, and there is little change in our motivation. Mathem- ical physics of quantum systems remains a lively subject of intrinsic interest with numerous applications, both actual and potential. Intheprefacetothe?rsteditionwehavedescribedtheoriginofthisbookrooted at the beginning in a course of lectures. With this fact in mind, we were naturally pleased to learn that the volume was used as a course text in many points of the world and we gladly accepted the o?er ofSpringer Verlag which inherited the rights from our original publisher, to consider preparation of a second edition. It was our ambition to bring the reader close to the places where real life dwells, and therefore this edition had to be more than a corrected printing. The ?eld is developing rapidly and since the ?rst edition various new subjects have appeared; as a couple of examples let us mention quantum computing or the major progress in theinvestigationofrandomSchr. odingeroperators.Thereare,however,goodsources intheliteraturewherethereadercanlearnabouttheseandothernewdevelopments.

At the age of almost three quarters of a century, quantum mechanics is by all accounts a mature theory. There were times when it seemed that it had borne its best fruit already and would give way to investigation of deeper levels of matter. Today this sounds like rash thinking. Modern experimental techniques have led to discoveries of numerous new quantum effects in solid state, optics and elsewhere. Quantum mechanics is thus gradually becoming a basis for many branches of applied physics, in this way entering our everyday life. While the dynamic laws of quantum mechanics are well known, a proper theoretical understanding requires methods which would allow us to de­ rive the abundance of observed quantum effects from the first principles. In many cases the rich structure hidden in the Schr6dinger equation can be revealed only using sophisticated tools. This constitutes a motivation to investigate rigorous methods which yield mathematically well-founded properties of quantum systems.

The shared purpose in this collection of papers is to apply the theory of self-adjoint extensions of symmetry operators in various areas of physics. This allows the construction of exactly solvable models in quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, high energy physics, solid-state physics, microelectronics and other fields. The 20 papers selected for these proceedings give an overview of this field of research unparallelled in the published literature; in particular the views of the leading schools are clearly presented. The volume collects papers from talks given at QMath11 — Mathematical Results in Quantum Physics, which was held in Hradec Králové, September 2010. These papers bring new and interesting results in quantum mechanics and information, quantum field theory, random systems, quantum chaos, as well as in the physics of social systems. Part of the contribution is dedicated to Ari Laptev on the occasion of his 60th birthday, in recognition of his mathematical results and his service to the community. The QMath conference series has played an important role in mathematical physics for more than two decades, typically attracting many of the best results achieved in the last three-year period, and the meeting in Hradec Králové was no exception.

The International Congress on Mathematical Physics is the flagship conference in this exciting field. Convening every three years, it gives a survey on the progress achieved in all branches of mathematical physics. It also provides a superb platform to discuss challenges and new ideas. The present volume collects material from the XVIth ICMP which was held in Prague, August 2009, and features most of the plenary lectures and invited lectures in topical sessions as well as information on other parts of the congress program.This volume provides a broad coverage of the field of mathematical physics, from dominantly mathematical subjects to particle physics, condensed matter, and application of mathematical physics methods in various areas such as astrophysics and ecology, amongst others.
