The main aim of this symposium was to bring together end-users and control system specialists to evaluate the possibilities for improvement of techniques, design procedures, components and instruments to encourage low cost automation; considering not only economic aspects but also improvements in productivity, reliability, flexibility and ease-of-application. Special emphasis was placed on small and medium sized enterprises. The technical sessions dealt with topics from process automation as well as from manufacturing automation.

Over recent years, a number of people actively involved in engineering, but also in other fields, have worked on the topic of international stability. Workshops have been held in various places and organized by different people and institutions.

This conference, the sixth event in the SWIIS series, continued the tradition set in the earlier five SWIIS meetings. The goal was the beneficial application of systems engineering methods onto description of conditions, in which nations or groups interact with one another. Scientists from other fields such as political science, economics, social science, and international studies also had a platform to present and discuss their ideas.

In the technical program of this conference, 2 survey papers and 19 regular papers - grouped into 8 sessions - were presented. Papers were given in the following areas: Methodological analysis; Investigation of development: stability, sustainable development; Modelling of stability; Application of control principles to international stability; International policy co-operation; Cultural and educational aspects in international stability; East/West/North/South relationships; Global development - regional impact; and Negotiation and mediation in conflict.

This Proceedings contains the papers presented at the eighth in IFAC's conference series on Supplementary Ways for Improving International Stability. This conference, entitled "Social Stability: The Challenge of Technology Development", was held in Vienna, Austria, on 27-29 September 2001.

The papers included in this Proceedings volume cover a very broad field of interest, and include topics such as social aspects of technology transfer, managing the introduction of technological change, ethical aspects, technology and environmental stability and anticipating secondary and tertiary effects of technological development.

Technological development has caused profound changes to social stability. Regions that had stable populations for centuries have experienced enormous population growth, leading to the formation of sometimes unmanageable megaplex cities, as well as bringing about macroscopic environmental change. The papers in this Proceedings offer insights into ways to mitigate the unwanted side-effects of rapid development, and methodologies for appropriate ways of managing the introduction of technologies which will alter social stability.

This conference was dedicated to Professor Harold Chestnut, the first president of IFAC, who died in August 2001. Professor Chestnut was among the pioneers of social stability ideas within IFAC and formed the technical committee which organises this conference series.

The objective of this 1st Workshop was to bring together end-users, manufacturers and (computer) control specialists to evaluate possibilities in the important field of factory automation. This volume offers solutions for product, process design, production design and control. Technical criteria are also discussed and economic justification methods are evaluated. The papers included present intelligent, modular, "low cost" approaches or solutions appropriate for small and medium sized companies which might benefit from improved efficiency and competitiveness.

Finding an alternative to supplement military ways of resolving international conflicts has been taken up by many people skilled in various areas such as political science, economics, social studies, modelling and simulation, artificial intelligence and expert systems, military strategy and weaponry as well as private business and industry. The Workshop will therefore be of use as it looks at various control methods which would create a conciliatory social and political environment or climate for seeking and obtaining non-military solutions to international conflicts and to solutions to national conflicts which may lead to international conflicts.

This volume contains 92 papers on the state-of-the-art in robotics research. In this volume topics on modelling and identification are treated first as they build the basis for practically all control aspects. Then, the most basic control tasks are discussed i.e. problems of inverse kinematics. Groups of papers follow which deal with various advanced control aspects. They range from rather general methods to more specialized topics such as force control and control of hydraulic robots. The problem of path planning is addressed and strategies for robots with one arm, for mobile robots and for multiple arm robots are presented. Also covered are computational improvements and software tools for simulation and control, the integration of sensors and sensor signals in robot control.

This volume investigates simulation and computer-aided control system designs. The book covers the use of models and program packages, their theoretical aspects and practical applications, and uses illustrative case studies to give a comprehensive view of this fast developing science.

Dem technisch orientierten Leser bietet das Buch eine praxisorientierte Einführung in die Informatik bzw. Informationstechnik. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der praktischen Anwendbarkeit und Beispielen aus den Ingenieurwissenschaften. Das Buch ist didaktisch als Lehrbuch aufgebaut. Insbesondere die Heranführung an das Thema, Erklärungen,  Kapitelzusammenfassungen und Übungsaufgaben erlauben ein einfaches und selbstständiges Erlernen des Stoffes. Industrial robots as a kind of a mechatronic system were the objects for intensive scientific research in the last years. Kinematics and kinetics, advanced control algorithms, flexible robots, mobile robots, cooperation of robots were research topics. Meanwhile the industrial robot is more or less a tool on the shop floor level like NC- and CNC-machines, transportation and storage devices. The current research landscape on industrial robots can be divided in two directions. The first direction is the scientific one and topics like fuzzy control, applications of neuronal networks, application of methods of artificial intelligence for robot control, optimal path planning are currently headlines in this field. On the other hand the application oriented research goes in the direction to develop and create new low-cost concepts including industrial robots applicable in a commercially efficient way mainly in small and medium sized companies. The industry in most of the member countries of the Alpe-Adria Group are dominated by small and medium sized companies. Industrial robots together with the appropriate CIM-concepts are a very efficient tool for increasing the flexibility of such companies. At the first meeting in Portoroz (June 1992), a first overview on robotics research and applications in Alpe-Adria countries was given. First steps were done in the direction of a broader cooperation in science, development, production and level of education among these countries.

Der Einsatz elektronischer Datenverarbeitung in Krankenanstalten erfährt in den letzten Jahren eine stürmische Entwicklung. War ursprünglich nur daran gedacht, mit Hilfe der Datenverarbeitung administrative Tätigkeiten zu vereinfachen, so wird nun bereits ein integriertes Krankenhausinformationssystem angestrebt. Daten sollen möglichst am Ort ihrer Entstehung erfaßt werden und die Weiterleitung dieser Daten an alle Stationen, Abteilungen und Leistungsstellen, die diese Daten benötigen, sowie eine patientengerechte Auswertung dieser Daten sollen garantiert werden. Die Wissenschaftliche Landesakademie für Niederösterreich beschäftigt sich in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Zentrum für medizinische Aus-, Fort- und Weiterbildung mit dieser Thematik. Die Beiträge dieses Buches beleuchten die wissenschaftlichen Aspekte eines solchen Krankenhausinformationssystems, informieren über die angebotenen Systeme, geben Beispiele, wie Daten zu verwalten sind, und berichten über Anforderungskriterien von Anwenderseite.

Entstanden aus einer Pflichtvorlesung "EDV für Maschinenbauer" an der Technischen Universität Wien gibt das Buch Studenten und in der Praxis stehenden Technikern eine Einführung in die theoretischen Grundlagen der Informatik und der praktischen Anwendung, hier im speziellen im Maschinenbau.Nach der Vermittlung der notwendigen theoretischen Grundlagen wird anhand eines einfachen Programms die Problemanalyse mit den weiteren Schritten der Problembeschreibung, Programmierung und Implementierung erläutert. Mehrere technische Anwendungsbeispiele bieten einen Überblick in die Vielschichtigkeit integrierter technischer Systeme. Zur Lösung komplexer Probleme wird auf die entsprechende Spezialliteratur verwiesen.

Naturally,thebasisfortheconstructionandimplementationofCASTsoftwareis provided by the existing current knowledge in modeling and by the experience of practitioners in engineering design. Systems Theory, as seen from the viewpoint of CAST research and CAST tool development, has the role of providing formal frameworks and related theoretical knowledge for model-construction and model analysis.
