Science is like a tree: contrary to popular belief, both trees and science grow at their edges, not at their core. For science, this means that most of the fruitful and exciting developments are not happening at the core of established ?elds, but are instead happening at the boundaries between such ?elds. This has been particularly true for Computer Science. The most interesting database developments don’t happen inside the Database community, but rather where databases hit Biology. Similarly, the most interesting developments in Ar- ?cial Intelligence in recent years have happened where AI met the Web. Theyoung?eldofSemanticWebresearchhasbeenoneoftheresultsofanumber of different sub?elds of Computer Science being exposed to the challenges of the Web: databases, computational linguistics, knowledge representation, knowled- based systems and service-oriented computing are just some of the sub?elds that are all making contributions to the Semantic Web vision, namely a Web that consists not only of linksbetween web-pagesfull of picturesand text, but of a Semantic Web that consists of links between computer-interpretable data. Such a Semantic Web would make it possible to query and reason over integrated data-sets consisting of separate pieces of information that were never intended to be linked together, but that can nevertheless be fruitfully combined and integrated, sometimes even by a third party who neither wrote nor ownsany of the original piecesof data (just as is possible with web-pages on the current Web).

“Evolve or perish” – this is the motto for living systems. Judging by this saying, the Web is alive and well: new sites and business ideas are coming online almost daily and are able to attract millions of users often. The more recently coined term “Web 2.0” summarizes many of the new developments, capturing efforts making the Web more interactive (like Ajax), more collaborative (like Wikis), or more relationship oriented (like online social networks), aiming to partially fulfill the original promise of the Web. These new Web developments offer an opportunity and challenge for the Semantic Web: what previously manifested itself mostly in “dry” specifications is now becoming the foundation for information exchange on the Web, creating a shared semantic information space. These and other challenges have been picked up by several hundred computer scientists, developers, vendors, government workers, venture capitalists, students, and users, gathered in Athens, Atlanta, USA, November 5–9, 2006, for the Fifth International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2006). Building on previous successful meetings in Sardinia, Sanibel Island, Hiroshima, and Galway, this sixth annual conference demonstrates new research results, technology, and applications that show current incarnations of the Semantic Web. Especially encouraging is the shift towards more applications—whereas the Research Track attracted roughly as many papers as in the previous year, the contributions submitted to the In-Use Track doubled.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the joined 6th International Semantic Web Conference, ISWC 2007, and the 2nd Asian Semantic Web Conference, ASWC 2007. The papers address all current issues in the field of the semantic Web, ranging from theoretical and foundational aspects to various applied topics such as management of semantic Web data, ontologies, semantic Web architecture, social semantic Web, as well as applications of the semantic Web.

The two-volume set LNCS 6496 and 6497 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Semantic Web Conference, ISWC 2010, held in Shanghai, China, during November 7-11, 2010. Part I contains 51 papers out of 578 submissions to the research track. Part II contains 18 papers out of 66 submissions to the semantic Web in-use track, 6 papers out of 26 submissions to the doctoral consortium track, and also 4 invited talks. Each submitted paper were carefully reviewed. The International Semantic Web Conferences (ISWC) constitute the major international venue where the latest research results and technical innovations on all aspects of the Semantic Web are presented. ISWC brings together researchers, practitioners, and users from the areas of artificial intelligence, databases, social networks, distributed computing, Web engineering, information systems, natural language processing, soft computing, and human computer interaction to discuss the major challenges and proposed solutions, the success stories and failures, as well the visions that can advance research and drive innovation in the Semantic Web.
