In the 3rd edition of the leading introductory textbook to planning theory, Allmendinger provides a wide-ranging and up-to-date analysis of planning theories, how these relate to planning practice, and their significance. Moving away from a linear, chronological model of progress over time from one paradigm to another, Allmendinger explains how and why different theories have gained dominance in particular places at particular times, giving the reader a holistic view of the field of scholarship and to demonstrate the relevance of planning theory for practise.Planning theory has undergone significant changes in recent decades as new theories and perspectives have emerged. Allmendigner takes care to detail the historical evolution of planning theory and the key philosophical issues involved so as enable the reader to both understand and critique theories as they encounter them. This much revised edition of Philip Allmendinger's text draws upon both established theories and expands its scope of current thinking around neoliberalism, post-colonialism and post-structuralist thinking on politics, space and scale. This unique approach to planning theory means this is an essential for all students completing planning theory courses in Urban or Planning studies, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.New to this Edition:- Comprehensively revised and updated throughout- Greater international scope of coverage of theories and practice examples- Reflects the shift in planning theory to post-structuralism

Did the 1980s and 1990s see the death of planning?Exposing the myth that has grown up around Thatcherism, leading experts from a wide range of land-use policy areas examine the changes that were brought about in planning and the environment during the 1980s and 1990s, and argue that much less was achieved than expected.Urban Planning and the British New Right questions common assumptions about planning practices under Thatcherism, concluding that the complex relationship of power between central, local and national government requires a sensitivity to change that is inclusive rather than doctrinal. This is a book that says as much about the administration, institutions and processes of planning as it does about Mrs Thatcher's attempts to change it.

Postmodern social theory has provided significant insights into our understanding of society and its components. Key thinkers including Foucault, Baudrillard and Lyotard have challenged existing ideas about power and rationality in society. This book analyses planning from a postmodern perspective and explores alternative conceptions based on a combination of postmodern thinking and other fields of social theory. In doing so, it exposes some of the limits of postmodern social theory while providing an alternative conception of planning in the twenty-first century. This title will appeal to anyone interested in how we think and act in relation to cities, urban planning and governance.

Planning theory is currently in a confused state as a consequence of a number of changes over the last ten years in planning practice and social and economic theory. Even prior to these events, planning theory was an uncertain discipline, reflecting planning's precarious position between and resting upon a range of professional subject areas and philosophical roots. Planning Futures is an attempt to pin down the constantly evolving landscape of planning theory and to chart a path through this fast changing field.Planning Futures is an up-to-date reader on planning theory, but adds something more to the subject area than a mere textbook. The contributors have attempted to bridge theory and practice while putting forward new theoretical ideas. By drawing upon examples from planning practice and case study scenarios, the authors ensure that the work discusses planning theory within the context of present planning practice. Case studies are drawn from an international arena, from the UK, Europe, South Africa and Australia.

This book provides a multi-disciplinary study of territory, identity and space in a devolved UK, through the lens of spatial planning. It draws together leading internationally renowned researchers from a variety of disciplines to address the implications of devolution upon spatial planning and the rescaling of UK politics. Each contributor offers a different perspective on the core issues in planning today in the context of New Labour’s regional project, particularly the government’s concern with business competitiveness, and key themes are illustrated with important case studies throughout.

Spatial planning, strongly advocated by government and the profession, is intended to be more holistic, more strategic, more inclusive, more integrative and more attuned to sustainable development than previous approaches. In what the authors refer to as the New Spatial Planning, there is a fairly rapidly evolving maturity and sophistication in how strategies are developed and produced. Crucially, the authors argue that the reworked boundaries of spatial planning means that to understand it we need to look as much outside the formal system of practices of ‘planning’ as within it. Using a rich empirical resource base, this book takes a critical look at recent practices to see whether the new spatial planning is having the kinds of impacts its advocates would wish. Contributing to theoretical debates in planning, state restructuring and governance, it also outlines and critiques the contemporary practice of spatial planning. This book will have a place on the shelves of researchers and students interested in urban/regional studies, politics and planning studies.

This book looks at the transition from New Labour’s ‘Spatial Planning’ approach to the Coalition Government’s preferred ‘Localism’ approach. Localism we are told will liberate local planners from the heavy hand of central government and allow planning to flourish at the local level. Alternatively, austerity cuts nationally mean planning faces cuts. In just two years the machinery of regional planning has been dismantled and local authorities are being asked to do more with less. Innovation is also evident, however, notably with the introduction of neighbourhood planning and Local Enterprise Partnerships. This collection contain chapters looking at the planning system overall, sustainability and planning, new approaches to infrastructure planning, and the critical interface between urban policy, local economic development and planning. This book was published as a special issue of Planning Practice and Research. It also contains a brand new afterword, written by the editors: ‘Localism, austerity and planning.’

This book brings together a number of highly innovative and thought provoking contributions from European researchers in territorial governance-related fields such as human geography, planning studies, sociology, and management studies. The contributions share the ambition of highlighting troubling contemporary tendencies where spatial planning and territorial governance can be seen to circumscribe or subvert ‘due democratic practice’ and the democratic ethos. The book also functions as an introduction to some of the central strands of contemporary political philosophy, discussing their relevance for the wider field of planning studies and the development of new planning practices.

This book is aimed at students on town planning and related courses, as well as practitioners who want to locate their practice within the broadening activity of town planning. It is written by practising town planners and academics with practice experience, and the chapters include many case studies which make connections for the reader between theory and practice. The book does not aim to be comprehensive, but to lay out the terrain in the key areas. It is a gateway to the exciting and varied world of town planning, which should stimulate the reader to want to find out more. It should heighten the appreciation of practice in all its forms and widen the horizons of the world of the professional town planner.

Planning lies at the heart of successful and sustainable places, yet planning scholarship often appears stuck in routinised patterns of thought. Critical Planning Futures brings together an international range of voices from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to explore new directions in planning theory, interrogate planning’s orthodoxy, and push the boundaries of contemporary theory using ideas both from within planning and beyond. Contributors draw on examples from across the globe, considering the applicability of concepts and theories across traditional divides. In this way, Critical Planning Futures continues planning’s rich tradition of borrowing ideas from elsewhere and using those ideas to shine a light back onto well-rehearsed theoretical debates to set out new ways forward for planning in the twenty-first century. This book will be a vital resource for planning specialists, though the breadth of ideas will be of interest to academics and researchers in a wide range of disciplines, including urban studies, geography, political science, and sociology.

In the 4th edition of the leading introductory textbook, Allmendinger provides a wide-ranging and up-to-date analysis of planning theories and how these relate to practice. Moving away from a linear, chronological model of progress over time from one paradigm to another, Allmendinger explains how and why different theories have gained dominance in particular places at particular times, providing a holistic view of the field. The Covid-19 pandemic and the influence of digital technology – especially AI and machine learning – have led to speculation that the field is approaching the ‘end of theory’, and new frameworks for thinking about cities and planning. This revised edition analyses the position of established Marxist, neoliberal, postmodern and post-structural frameworks for planning, as well as considering collaborative practice, pragmatism, and new directions for the field. Chapters assume no prior knowledge of the topics covered, and consider the relationship between planning and the most pressing societal challenges, including climate change, sustainability, and health. New to this edition:- Comprehensively revised and updated throughout- New chapters dedicated to ‘Gender, Race and Diversity in Planning’ and ‘Planning and Theory in the Digital Age’Allmendinger’s unique approach to planning theory makes this an essential textbook for all undergraduate and postgraduate students of urban and environmental planning.
