*** Featuring a foreword by Pritzker Prize Winner Shigeru Ban ***Bringing together experts from research and practice, Shell Structures for Architecture: Form Finding and Optimization presents contemporary design methods for shell and gridshell structures, covering form-finding and structural optimization techniques. It introduces architecture and engineering practitioners and students to structural shells and provides computational techniques to develop complex curved structural surfaces, in the form of mathematics, computer algorithms, and design case studies.• Part I introduces the topic of shells, tracing the ancient relationship between structural form and forces, the basics of shell behaviour, and the evolution of form-finding and structural optimization techniques.• Part II familiarizes the reader with form-finding techniques to explore expressive structural geometries, covering the force density method, thrust network analysis, dynamic relaxation and particle-spring systems.• Part III focuses on shell shape and topology optimization, and provides a deeper understanding of gradient-based methods and meta-heuristic techniques.• Part IV contains precedent studies of realised shells and gridshells describing their innovative design and construction methods.

The book presents research from Rob|Arch 2018, the fourth international conference on robotic fabrication in architecture, art, and design. In capturing the myriad of scientific advances in robotics fabrication that are currently underway – such as collaborative design tools, computerised materials, adaptive sensing and actuation, advanced construction, on-site and cooperative robotics, machine-learning, human-machine interaction, large-scale fabrication and networked workflows, to name but a few – this compendium reveals how robotic fabrication is becoming a driver of scientific innovation, cross-disciplinary fertilization and creative capacity of an unprecedented kind.

This book contains 24 technical papers presented at the fourth edition of the Advances in Architectural Geometry conference, AAG 2014, held in London, England, September 2014. It offers engineers, mathematicians, designers, and contractors insight into the efficient design, analysis, and manufacture of complex shapes, which will help open up new horizons for architecture. The book examines geometric aspects involved in architectural design, ranging from initial conception to final fabrication. It focuses on four key topics: applied geometry, architecture, computational design, and also practice in the form of case studies. In addition, the book also features algorithms, proposed implementation, experimental results, and illustrations.Overall, the book presents both theoretical and practical work linked to new geometrical developments in architecture. It gathers the diverse components of the contemporary architectural tendencies that push the building envelope towards free form in order to respond to multiple current design challenges. With its introduction of novel computational algorithms and tools, this book will prove an ideal resource to both newcomers to the field as well as advanced practitioners.

Setting new developments in digital graphic construction methods against the backdrop of time-tested design principles results in extraordinary approaches to the design of self-supporting structures. Using their Armadillo Vault, which was recognised at the Biennale 2016 in Venice, the Block Research Group at ETH Zürich describes their research, development processes and visions of resource-saving, refined and steel-free support structures. Fundamental to their work is an intensive exploration of principles. The Block Research Group is the DETAIL Reader Prize Winner for 2016.

About ten years ago, Professor Stanford Anderson from MIT initiated the joint-workshop program with Tongji University in Shanghai and has continued his decade-long collaborations with us since then. The Robotic Force Printing Workshop this year can be seen as a respectful tribute and continuity to such tradition.Philip F. Yuan, a professor of Tongji University and the founder of Fab-Union Technology was in collaboration with Professor Philippe Block of ETH throughout the 23-day workshop. In addition to the design-fabrication studios, the workshop also consists of three field trips in association with one academic forum, four public lectures and a series of teaching modules on fundamental concepts of COMPAS and FURobotic to explore the integration between novel structural designs and the advances in additive manufacturing and robotic fabrication.
