Combining language research with digital, multimodal, and critical literacy, this book uniquely positions issues of transcultural spaces and cosmopolitan identities across an array of contexts. Studies of everyday diasporic practices across places, spaces, and people’s stories provide authentic pictures of people living in and with diversity. Its distinctive contribution is a framework to relate observation and analysis of these flows to language development, communication, and meaning making. Each chapter invites readers to reflect on the dynamism and complexity of spaces and contexts in an age of increasing mobility, political upheaval, economic instabilities, and online/offline landscapes.

Since patterns of immigration began taking hold, one of the primary goals of any immigrant to, or citizen of, North America has been to be accepted and to adapt to a new culture and learn to live a productive and healthy life. There are many different means by which people endeavor to accomplish this. One of these is through education, a platform that has been, and should continue to be, a principal path to achieving this goal. The field of education has also become one of the primary forums for provoking and questioning societal norms and is a powerful means towards achieving the vision of a multicultural society capable of living, working, and playing in harmony.Anti-Islamophobic Curriculums presents a specific curriculum to help teachers and young learners gain more awareness of cultures much different from theirs. Anti-Islamophobic Curriculums also endeavours to decrease sociophobic reaction toward cultures that are unfamiliar and to acquaint learners with a curriculum beyond what has traditionally been their predominant English/French/Indigenous experience. While the conclusions this book draws are applicable to any culture, the curriculum presented here emphasizes the Islamic culture and, through the educational process, aims to mitigate the sociophobic reaction its members often encounter.

The current turbulent global political climate has led to unprecedented numbers of economic migrants and refugees seeking asylum, many of whom are school-aged children in need of linguistic, cultural, and emotional support. The title of this volume, Redirecting the Flow of Knowledge Across Languages and Cultures, reflects an intentional effort to challenge Western hegemonic traditions and promote an inclusive, pluralistic vision of language, culture, and identity—one that foregrounds the transformative potential of multilingualism and intercultural awareness. This collection reimagines literacy learning through diverse cultural frameworks and linguistic systems, offering alternative pathways for education that are responsive to global realities. The contributing chapters showcase innovative autobiographical methodologies and research designs grounded in culturally sustaining pedagogies. The contributors—experienced educators and scholars with rich linguistic and cultural backgrounds—offer insights of particular relevance to teacher education programs across varied educational contexts. Redirecting the Flow of Knowledge Across Languages and Cultures affirms the foundational premise that students from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds bring invaluable knowledge to the classroom and to the teaching and learning process. The volume interrogates and illuminates critical themes such as language awareness, cultural competence, and the implementation of pedagogical practices that sustain diverse identities. Collectively, the scholars in this volume share a commitment to advancing methodological approaches that recognize identity as a central component of learning—an aspect too often overlooked in contemporary classrooms. The book ultimately advocates for culturally sustaining pedagogies, critical language awareness, and educational practices rooted in social justice.
