Since the beginning of social transformation they have been flourishing better than ever before. They are a main outlet on the market for the newly emerging middle classes, stabilize the situation of many workers and pensioners, and in countries on the downward slope they are essential for the survival of large impoverished groups. Presenting recent research on the social importance of informal economies, especially in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Russia, the editors give a short introduction for each country, and a common compilation of basic economic and social data follows in the appendix. Household strategies in the ’shadow’, groups of informal winners and losers, informal employment in town and countryside, outcomes from informal activities, the macro-economic importance of informal economies, and researching methods are all investigated.

Mit dem Zusammenbruch der DDR haben sich auch die Bedingungen fur die Entwicklung der Stadte grundlegend verandert. Der Wandel von der 'Stadt im Sozialismus' zur 'Stadt im Kapitalismus' und die damit verbundenen Probleme sind Gegenstand dieses Bandes. Die Beitrage behandeln sowohl theoretisch als auch empirisch die raumlichen und sozialen Veranderungen, die das aussere Erscheinungsbild, die Organisation der Stadt, die Stadtstruktur und die soziale Zusammensetzung von Quartieren erfasst haben: Veranderungen der Alltagsorganisation, Wandel von Nutzungsstrukturen, neue Formen der sozialen Segregation, Innenstadtentwicklung und Suburbanisierung, Restitution von Privateigentum bei Immobilien und Privatisierung von Neubauwohnungen, Wandel von Nachbarschaften und Wohnmilieus, Entwicklung von Wohnqualitat und Mieten, neue Burgerinitiativen, die Zukunft der Plattenbausiedlungen sowie Stadterneuerung. Damit bietet "Stadtentwicklung in Ostdeutschland" ein erstes Gesamtbild der neuen Wohn- und Lebensbedingungen in den ostdeutschen Stadten.

Fragen nach dem Städtischen, nach dem Aufbau, den Lebensbedingungen, Kultur(en) und Lebensstilen der (Groß-)Stadt sind Gründungsfragen der Stadtsoziologie. Traditionell wird das Spezifische und ‚Neue‘ der Stadt vor allem im Kontrast zur vormodernen Gesellschaft und/oder ländlichen Gemeinschaft profiliert. Doch worin bestehen die Besonderheiten von Städten heute? Der Band bietet einen Überblick, der die Auseinandersetzung mit grundlegenden Entwicklungslinien der Stadtsoziologie verknüpft mit aktuellen empirischen Arbeiten zur Entwicklung spezifischer städtischer Kulturen und Quartierstypen sowie zu den heute vielerorts virulenten Kämpfen um städtische Räume und ihre Aneignung.
