This open access book explores how digital tools and social media technologies can contribute to better participation and involvement of EU citizens in European politics. By analyzing selected representative e-participation projects at the local, national and European governmental levels, it identifies the preconditions, best practices and shortcomings of e-participation practices in connection with EU decision-making procedures and institutions. The book features case studies on parliamentary monitoring, e-voting practices, and e-publics, and offers recommendations for improving the integration of e-democracy in European politics and governance. Accordingly, it will appeal to scholars as well as practitioners interested in identifying suitable e-participation tools for European institutions and thus helps to reduce the EU’s current democratic deficit.   This book is a continuation of the book “Electronic Democracy in Europe” published by Springer.

This open access book explores the relevance of the concept of technology assessment (TA) on an international and global level. Technologies play a key role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, population aging, digitization, and health. At the same time, their use increases the need for coordinated action and governance at the global level in the field of science, technology and innovation (STI).  Featuring case studies on STI fields such as energy, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and health technology, as well as TA activities at the national and international levels, this book reflects on the challenges and opportunities of global technology governance. It also provides an in-depth discussion of current governmental STI cultures and systems, societal expectations, and the policy priorities needed to achieve coordinated and effective STI intervention in policymaking and public debate at the global level. Lastly, the book promotes the establishment of a forum for a truly global dialogue of TA practitioners, fostering the articulation of their needs, knowledge and perspectives.

This edited book is the first of its kind tosystematically address the intersection of e-democracy and European politics. It contributes to an improved understanding of the role that new mediatechnologies play in European politics and the potential impact thatInternet-based political participation processes may have on modern-dayrepresentative democracy in Europe. A unique, holistic approach is taken to examinee-democracy’s current state and prospects in Europe from three, partiallyoverlapping and interlocking perspectives: e-public, e-participation ande-voting. The authors provide both theory-inspired reflections on e-democracy’scontribution to the formation of the European public sphere, as well as richempirical analyses of contemporary e-participation phenomena such as theEuropean Citizens’ Initiative or e-voting practices in Estonia. Based on the presentedfindings, the concluding chapter combines a prospective outlook withrecommendations for future paths towards meaningful integration of e-democracyin European politics and governance.

November 2018 in Karlsruhe stattfand.Mit Beiträgen vonFabian Adelt, Marius Albiez, Annika Arnold, Walaa Bashary, Anja Bauer, Richard Beecroft, Alexander Bogner, Stefan Böschen, Tanja Bratan, Simone Colombo, Michael Decker, Rico Defila, Antonietta Di Giulio, Marion Dreyer, Elisabeth Ehrensperger, Philipp Ellett, Lorenz Erdmann, Ali Abdelshafy Ezzat, Erik Fisher, Michael Friedewald, Livia Fritz, Daniela Fuchs, Maryegli Fuss, Armin Grunwald, Niklas Gudowsky, Kristin Hagen, Simeon Hassemer, Alexandra Hausstein, Nils B.
