La frontera internacional surgida en el suroeste de la actual Bolivia y en el noroeste de la actual Argentina a partir de las guerras de independencia separó en dos un área que hasta entonces había estado integrada en lo social, económico e histórico. Cada uno de estos territorios se sumó a los respectivos países que a lo largo de los siglos XIX y XX siguieron derroteros muy diferentes. El libro analiza aspectos de la población a la luz de las diferencias ecológicas y de pertenencia estatal que presenta el territorio, centrado fundamentalmente en la mortalidad, la emigración, las formas de tenencia de la tierra y sus variaciones; e indagando cómo estos factores afectaron la evolución y distribución de la población a lo largo del tiempo. Se analiza el proceso tanto desde la dimensión ecológica como política y se examina la construcción del estado nacional desde una perspectiva pocas veces ensayada: la de un territorio rural habitado mayoritariamente por indígenas y políticamente marginal. Las diferencias encontradas a un lado y otro de la frontera internacional, sin embargo, no se han desarrollado en forma lineal en el tiempo ni son obvias, ya que en muchas ocasiones fueron más claramente consecuencia de la historia colonial que de las políticas nacionales. Por otra parte, el medio ambiente y su influencia en la economía doméstica definieron unidades territoriales que traspasan la frontera diluyendo el peso de la pertenencia estatal y reforzando la importancia de procesos históricos de larga duración.
