This open access book engages with the concept of reproductive justice by exploring case studies of struggles around abortion in the context of rising anti-genderism, religious fundamentalism, and ethno-nationalism. Based on rich qualitative data offering in-depth analyses from different geographical, political and cultural contexts, the book explores how reproductive justice is understood, contested and given meaning. Chapters further develop the Black feminist concept of reproductive justice in a critical dialogue with postcolonial theory and explore the strength of transnational feminist practices. This book thus offers a fresh approach to the issue of abortion by engaging with contemporary political and cultural processes, and it expands the narrow notions of women’s rights, particularly notions of property rights over bodies, towards an analysis of the political economy of social reproduction and how it affects bodies that can be pregnant. This volume will be of interest to scholars with interests in reproductive justice, anti-gender politics, and religious fundamentalism.

Högre utbildning och forskning är en av de samhällsarenor där kvinnors position radikalt har förändrats de senaste trettio åren. Kvinnor är inte länge en minoritet inom akademin i stort, sam­tidigt som män fortfarande dominerar på lednings­positioner och professors­tjänster. Andra minoritiserade grupper har också uppnått en större närvaro och synlighet. Policy för jämställdhet och mångfald är ofta centralt i universitetens framställning av sig själva som framgångsrika. "Att bryta innanförskapet" är en ansats att kritiskt granska och expandera vad jämställdhet och mångfald är och skulle kunna vara inom akademin. Forskare inom genusvetenskap, sociologi, socialt arbete och rättssociologi undersöker här kopp­lingar mellan kön, etnicitet, sexualitet, klass och makt, gränser och villkor för närvaro samt hur olika grupper av anställda erfar, namnger och tolkar sina positioner och möjligheter inom ramen för de akademiska strukturförändringarna. I antologins texter undersöker vi å ena sidan vem och vilka som problematiseras och ska åtgärdas i policy, samt vilken plats policy har inom forskningspolitik och inom organisationen. Å den andra lyfter vi fram underordnade gruppers erfarenheter av att jobba och verka inom akademin. En inkluderande under­ordning i förhållande till minoritiserade grupper är fortfarande en realitet på akademiska arbetsplatser och i vetenskapliga discipliner.

This is a book about gender, labour, and changing relations of power in a Swedish hospital, and presents an ethnographic study of nurses and their work. Paid care work has been a domain of institutional compliance to male dominance, as well as a critical space for women to become economically independent and skilled. In 'Femininity at Work' Rebecca Selberg gives new analytical perspectives and fresh insights into this area. Selberg situates the new conditions for nurses' work firmly in the neoliberal transformation of the ­Swedish welfare state. Nursing has undergone dramatic changes in terms of work intensification and new forms of subordination and class boundaries. At the same time, the nursing profession has embraced nurses' new role as adjunct managers in running the clinics and taking on new responsibilities offered by New Public ­Management. The key contribution of Selberg's work is her use of the concept of femininity. Through ethnographic explorations of material and ideological conditions of care work, she shows that gendered subjectivities can best be grasped by using the 'plurality of femininities' as a conceptual tool. Rebecca Selberg offers an empirically rich investigation of change and continuity in the relationship between femininity and care work among Swedish nurses. In addition to insights into changing conditions of care work within the public sector, the book makes a significant theoretical contribution through its analysis of how labour processes shape and are in turn shaped by femininities.
