The edited book brings together country experts on populism, ethno-territorial politics, and party competition. It consists of twelve empirical chapters, covering seven Western European states (Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK) as well as four Central European states (Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, and Poland). It is a collaboration by scholars from across Europe which contributes to the growing literature on populism by focusing on a relatively unexplored research agenda: the intersection of territoriality, ethno-politics, and populism. Presenting an original perspective contributing experts use case studies to highlight the territorial dimension of populism in different ways and identify that a deeper understanding of the interactions between populist actors and ethno-territorial ideologies is required. This book will be of interest to academics, researchers, and students of European politics, populism, and ethno-territorial politics.

A shift has occurred more recently, however, as populist far-right voices within the Austrian government have redirected public discourse and put into question Islam’s previously accepted autonomous status within the country. Politicizing Islam in Austria examines this anti-Muslim swerve in Austrian politics through a comprehensive analysis of government policies and regulations, as well as party and public discourses. In their innovative study, Hafez and Heinisch show how the far-right Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) adapted anti-Muslim discourse to their political purposes and how that discourse was then appropriated by the conservative center-right Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP). This reconfiguration of the political landscape prepared the way for a right-wing coalition government between conservatives and far-right actors that would subsequently institutionalize anti-Muslim political demands and change the shape of the civic conditions and public perceptions of Islam and the Muslim community in the republic.

Das "Salzburger Jahrbuch für Politik" erschien zum ersten Mal 1999. Herausgegeben vom Politikwissenschafter Herbert Dachs und vom Leiter des Salzburger Landespressebüros Roland Floimair leistete es für Österreich Pionierarbeit, indem hier über zwei Jahrzehnte hinweg im Zwei-Jahres-Rhythmus eine regelmäßige, systematische, wissenschaftlich fundierte und dabei allgemein verständlich formulierte Bestandsaufnahme der gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen und der Politik eines Bundeslandes erfolgte. Andere Bundesländer (Burgenland, Kärnten, Steiermark, Tirol, Vorarlberg, Wien) folgten dem Salzburger Beispiel und brachten eigene Jahrbücher heraus, was die Einstellung des Projektes 2010 umso bedauerlicher erscheinen lässt.Ausgehend von der Überlegung, dass regionale (und lokale) Politik trotz zunehmender Globalisierung und europäischer Integration nach wie vor – nicht zuletzt als identitätsstiftender Faktor – ihre Bedeutung hat, wurde 2017 ein neuer Anlauf gestartet, das "Salzburger Jahrbuch für Politik" wiederzubeleben.

Gesellschaft und Politik sind dem sich ständig beschleunigenden Wandel und der damit drohenden Unübersichtlichkeit, auf denen das ganze Spektrum unserer Aufmerksamkeit und Aufnahmebereitschaft – von der emotionalen Betroffenheit über die selektive Wahrnehmung bis zum weitgehenden Desinteresse – basiert, unterworfen. Das reflexive Innehalten, die Bereitschaft zur Analyse jenseits der im medialen Dschungel dominierenden Schlagzeilen, ist angesichts der dominanten Instant-Ideologie eine zentrale Aufgabe der Politikwissenschaft. Für Salzburg gilt, wie für alle Bundesländer, dass die politikwissenschaftliche Analyse das Spannungsfeld zwischen regionaler Besonderheit und Wirkmächtigkeit der österreichischen und europäischen Entwicklung zu berücksichtigen hat.

Wie funktioniert das politische System in Österreich? Warum hat es in den letzten Jahren an Vertrauen eingebüßt? Und was erklärt die vielzitierten "österreichischen Lösungen"? Antworten auf Fragen wie diese zu finden, gestaltet sich oft schwierig. Die rechtlichen Grundlagen gelten als schwer verständlich. Und viele politische Weichen werden in informellen Räumen gestellt, die in der Verfassung gar nicht vorgesehen sind. Das politische System gleicht somit einem Rätsel. Das Kritische Handbuch der österreichischen Demokratie möchte hier Antworten geben – wissenschaftlich fundiert, aber allgemein verständlich. Es beleuchtet das Regelwerk der Bundesverfassung, die Institutionen des demokratischen Prozesses und die politischen Funktionsweisen der Verwaltung. Vor allem aber zeigt es Theorie und Wirklichkeit des österreichischen Parteienstaates auf und denkt über Defizite und Reformmöglichkeiten nach.

Der Aufstieg des Populismus in westlichen Demokratien fordert nicht nur die etablierten politischen Parteien und kulturellen wie wirtschaftlichen Eliten heraus. Auch Schulen, Hochschulen und Universitäten sehen sich veranlasst, sich gegenüber politischen Bewegungen zu positionieren, die sie in Bezug auf ihre humanistischen, pluralistischen und diversitätsfreundlichen Bildungsideale attackieren.Wie kann dieses politische Phänomen, das die demokratischen Bausteine der westlichen Nachkriegsordnung und die Trägerprinzipien des modernen öffentlichen Schulwesens unmittelbar bedroht, neu definiert werden? Wie kann das moderne Schulwesen Bewegungen gegenübertreten, die eindimensional-simplifizierendes Denken, antidemokratische und diskriminierende Einmütigkeit sowie den nationalistischen Rückzug propagieren?
