The rise of nationalist, racist and anti-feminist ideologies is one of the most frightening repercussions of the collapse of socialism. Using psychoanalytic theories of fantasy to investigate why such extremist ideologies have taken hold, Renata Salecl argues that the major social and political changes in post-communist Eastern Europe require a radical re-evaluation of notions of liberal theories of democracy. In doing so she offers a new approach to human rights and feminism grounded in her own active partipation in the struggles, first against communism and now against nationalism and anti-feminism.

Contemporary discourse seems to provide a choice in the way sexual identities and sexual difference are described and analyzed. On the one hand, much current thinking suggests that sexual identity is fluid-socially constructed and/or performatively enacted. This discourse is often invoked in the act of overcoming an earlier patriarchal era of fixed and naturalized identities. On the other hand, some modern discourses of sexual identity seem to offer a New Age Jungian re-sexualization of the universe-"Men are from Mars, and women are from Venus"-according to which there is an underlying, deeply anchored archetypal identity that provides a kind of safe haven in the contemporary confusion of roles and identities.In this volume, contributors discuss a third way of thinking about sexual identity and sexual difference-a direction opened by Jacques Lacan. For Lacan, what we all recognize as sexual difference is first and foremost representative of a certain fundamental deadlock inherent in the symbolic order, that is, in language and in the entire realm of culture conceived as a symbol system structured on the model of language. For him, the logical matrix of this deadlock is provided by his own formulas of sexuation. The essays collected here elaborate on different aspects of this deadlock of sexual difference. While some examine the role of semblances in the relation between the sexes or consider sexual identity not as anatomy but still involving an impasse of the real, others discuss the difference between sexuation and identification, the role of symbolic prohibition in the process of the subject’s sexual formation, or the changed role of the father in contemporary society and the impact of this change on sexual difference. The crisis caused by Covid-19 has shown these dilemmas to be very real, and many countries faced significant health care challenges during the pandemic. The book presents different views on the problems of triage during the time of Covid-19 and to shed a light on how various countries approached triage during the pandemic.
The absence of staff and resources in many countries opened a discussion of whether they should strive for the most egalitarian way of deciding whom to help with limited resources or to act in a utilitarian manner and establish a triage system based on saving as many people as possible. There were so-called conflicts of duty in many parts of the world, and decision-makers who had to choose which patients would survive in the absence of resources were under tremendous pressure. This book presents different views on the issue of such decision-making from legal, ethical, and medical points of view. The authors explain the origin of the concept of triage and its use in modern medicine. They point out the distinction between triage and the allocation of resources while also analysing how pandemic triage differs from emergency and disaster triage.
