El 1 de enero de 2011 se ha cumplido el 25 aniversario de la entrada en vigor del Tratado de Adhesión de España a las Comunidades Europeas (Unión Europea) firmado el 12 de ¡unió de 1985. El 9 de noviembre de 2014 se cumplió el 25 aniversario de la caída del Muro de Berlín. Dicha fecha marca un antes y un después en la historia reciente de Europa y en el proceso de integración comunitaria. Desde finales de 1989 hasta comienzos de 1992, en poco más de dos años, se produjo el hundimiento de los regímenes comunistas de la Europa del Este y la implosión de la Unión Soviética, la reunificación de las dos Alemanias en un único Estado y la aprobación del Tratado de la Unión Europea, hito trascendental en la historia de la Europa comunitaria. Hay fechas en la Historia en las que los acontecimientos se aceleran, momentos que recogen la trayectoria de las décadas pasadas para convertirse en su epítome a la vez que aportan las grandes líneas directrices del futuro inmediato. El año de 1989 es, sin duda, una de estas fechas: en Paraguay, la eterna dictadura de Stroessner llegaba a su fin, mientras que unos kilómetros más al Oeste, en Chile, la oposición democrática vencía en las elecciones libres a una dictadura no menos emblemática, la de Augusto Pinochet. En Asia el régimen de los ayatolás enterraba aquel año a su líder, Jomeini mientras que el gigante chino, todavía subestimado económica y políticamente, ofrecía su lado más oscuro en la matanza de estudiantes de Tiananmen.Pero fue sobre todo la caída del Muro de Berlín en noviembre lo que, simbólicamente, inició el final de los regímenes comunistas de Europa central y oriental y abrió las puertas a la desintegración de la Unión Soviética dos años más tarde.
