This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th European Conference on Genetic Programming, EuroGP 2003, held in Essex, UK in April 2003. The 45 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 61 submissions. All current aspects of genetic programming and genetic algorithms are addressed, ranging from foundational, theoretical, and methodological issues to advanced applications in various fields.

ANTS – The International Workshop on Ant Colony Optimization and Swarm Intelligence is now at its ?fth edition. The series started in 1998 with the - ganization of ANTS 1998. At that time the goal was to gather in a common meeting those researchers interested in ant colony optimization: more than 50 researchers from around the world joined for the ?rst time in Brussels, Belgium, to discuss ant colony optimization and swarm intelligence related research. A selectionofthebest paperspresentedatthe workshopwaspublished asa special issue of the Future Generation Computer Systems journal (Vol. 16, No. 8, 2000). Two years later, ANTS 2000, organized again in Brussels, attracted more than 70 participants. The 41 extended abstracts presented as talks or posters at the workshopwere collected in a booklet distributed to participants, and a selection of the best papers was published as a special section of the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation (Vol. 6, No. 4, 2002). After these ?rst two successful editions, it was decided to make of ANTS a seriesofbiannualeventswitho?cialworkshopproceedings.Thethirdandfourth editions were organized in September 2002 and September 2004, respectively. Proceedings were published by Springer within the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The proceedings of ANTS 2002, LNCS Volume 2463, contained 36 contri- tions: 17 full papers, 11 short papers, and 8 extended abstracts,selected out of a total of 52 submissions. Those of ANTS 2004, LNCS Volume 3172, contained 50 contributions:22 full papers, 19 shortpapers, and 9 extended abstracts,selected out of a total of 79 submissions.

Genetic programming (GP), one of the most advanced forms of evolutionary computation, has been highly successful as a technique for getting computers to automatically solve problems without having to tell them explicitly how. Since its inceptions more than ten years ago, GP has been used to solve practical problems in a variety of application fields. Along with this ad-hoc engineering approaches interest increased in how and why GP works. This book provides a coherent consolidation of recent work on the theoretical foundations of GP. A concise introduction to GP and genetic algorithms (GA) is followed by a discussion of fitness landscapes and other theoretical approaches to natural and artificial evolution. Having surveyed early approaches to GP theory it presents new exact schema analysis, showing that it applies to GP as well as to the simpler GAs. New results on the potentially infinite number of possible programs are followed by two chapters applying these new techniques.

The 18 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the volume. The book presents state-of-the-art research results applying techniques from evolutionary computing in the specific application areas.

The 14 revised full papers presented together with 13 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 39 submissions. All relevant aspects of genetic programming are addressed, ranging from theoretical and foundational issues to applications in a variety of fields such as automatic design, pattern recognition, robotic control, music and image processing, and symbolic regression.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of six workshops on evolutionary computation held concurrently as EvoWorkshops 2000 in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, in April 2000. The 37 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected by the respective program committees. All in all, the book demonstrates the broad application potential of evolutionary computing in a variety of fields. In accordance with the individual workshops, the book is divided into sections on image and signal processing; systems, controls, and drives in industry; telecommunications; scheduling and timetabling; robotics; and aeronautics.
