Sexuality is an integral part of gender identity, self-image, and overall well-being. Sexual dysfunctions present in all cultures and ethnicities around the world. Sexual problems have an especially high prevalence among patients with psychiatric syndromes -- yet, in recent years, the field of psychiatry has shifted away from the treatment of sexual disorders. Clinical Manual of Sexual Disorders is the first comprehensive text in decades to address the management and treatment of sexual dysfunctions and disorders. Using a conceptual model that incorporates biological, psychological, and cultural interventions as its guiding principle, the book explores and evaluates the epidemiology of sexual disorders and paraphilias, sexual dysfunctions with comorbid psychiatric disorders, sexual problems associated with various medications, and sexual disorders in specific patient populations.
Written by 25 contributing clinical specialists from around the world, the text combines conceptual shifts within the field of human sexuality with the latest research findings into a practical three-part volume. The first four chapters cover general areas relevant to the clinical understanding of human sexuality and sexual dysfunctions within the frame of psychiatry. The second part of the book outlines the major sexual dysfunctions, including male erectile disorder, female arousal disorder, premature ejaculation, and paraphilias. And the final chapters address the management of sexual issues in two unique patient populations that are often neglected in other textbooks -- children and adolescents and older adults.
The book includes several unique features to further enhance learner retention Tables, charts, figures, and illustrations to enhance the reading material Evaluations, questionnaires and other patient materials Take-away points on key clinical issues at the end of each chapter Case examples from the authors'' own practices References for further reading
Restoration of sexual function can improve the quality of life for many individuals with and without psychiatric disorders, making recognition and treatment of sexual problems of utmost importance to any general psychiatric practice. As the only text of its kind, Clinical Manual of Sexual Disorders provides a concise, clinically-oriented biopsychosocial guide to the management and treatment of sexual dysfunction that is appropriate for all psychiatric, clinical, and educational settings.

Most clinicians endorse the combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy as more effective and beneficial than each modality alone, but combining these treatments can be a complicated and highly variable process.
Competency in Combining Pharmacotherapy and Psychotherapy: Integrated and Split Treatment is designed to help psychiatrists at any stage of their career achieve competency in combining and coordinating pharmacotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic treatments for the benefit of their patients.
This guide, now in its updated, second edition, addresses both integrated (single clinician) and split/collaborative (multiple clinicians) treatments, discussing for each: The selection of medication and psychotherapy The patient evaluation and opening Sequencing Evaluating, monitoring, and supervising treatment Terminating and transitioning patient care
The book also offers a chapter -- new to this second edition -- that focuses on primary care access for mental health services in the context of integrated and split/collaborative care.
The rapid transformation of clinical care models in new health systems means that competence in integrated and split/collaborative care is absolutely vital for long-established clinicians as well as for psychiatric professionals in the early stages of their careers.
Competency in Combining Pharmacotherapy and Psychotherapy offers an unrivaled introduction to the complex process of combining medication and psychosocial treatments, clearly defining the competencies of combining two modalities. Psychiatric educators should note that this resource relates to all six main competencies of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education: patient care and procedural skills, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.

Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder: Understanding, Assessment, and Treatment tackles a diagnosis that remains the subject of intensive debate. Although compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) is among the new diagnoses included in the World Health Organization''s 11th Revision of its International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), which goes into effect in 2022, it does not appear in DSM-5. The editors, two of the preeminent researchers on sexual disorders, explain this schism by way of background and then, along with a roster of highly qualified contributors, undertake the work of describing CSBD, instructing clinicians on how to address it effectively in their practices and exploring areas for further research. The book is replete with clinical vignettes that illustrate the concepts addressed in the chapters, allowing the reader an intimate look at diagnostic, treatment, and cultural issues as well as comorbidities, co-occurring substance use, and more.
Coverage is clinically useful and thorough: Diagnostic aspects of CSBD are explored in two chapters: The first conceptualizes out-of-control sexual behavior and compares sexual addiction and CSBD by reviewing proposed criteria for both conditions, with an emphasis on common co-occurring psychiatric disorders, and the second details the comprehensive evaluation of CSBD and outlines how to conduct clinical interviews with CSBD patients. In a chapter both fascinating and rich in clinical insight, the authors explore the role of the internet in hypersexuality, ascertaining when online sexual activities become online sexual problems and proposing possible treatments. Because high rates of CSBD are found among individuals with substance use disorders, particularly in regard to alcohol, opioid, and stimulant use disorders, the book examines sexual addiction and substance abuse in depth, including preferred therapeutic modalities and interventions. Clinical treatments for CSBD -- both psychopharmacological and biopsychosocial -- are presented, with the former emphasizing the importance of enhancing sexual self-control, reducing sexual drive, and treating comorbid psychiatric disorders, and the latter taking an integrative approach, focusing on underlying concerns with intimacy formation, describing treatment modalities, and describing the phases of treatment. Because legal issues and hypersexuality overlap regularly, the forensic aspects of CBSD are addressed, with the goal of assisting clinicians in competently navigating the legal sphere -- from developing a legally defensible opinion to identifying mitigating factors to acting as an expert witness.
Although the diagnosis of CSBD may be debatable by taxonomists, the fact remains that patients presenting with these problems are suffering. Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder: Understanding, Assessment, and Treatment brings clinicians up to speed with the ICD-11 diagnosis and empowers them to understand and alleviate the psychological pain of their patients and clients.

When prescribed appropriately, most psychotropic medications are fairly safe. Although some side effects are common and even expected, occasional serious—and even life-threatening—adverse effects may arise that require immediate intervention. The Pocket Guide to Emergent and Serious Adverse Events in Psychopharmacology focuses on the latter. With chapters written by a combination of experts and novices in the field, this guide provides a summary of the extant knowledge of effects that include:
• Acute dystonia• Cardiac emergencies• Discontinuation and withdrawal• Neuroleptic malignant syndrome• Overdose
Designed to be easily referenced, chapters are arranged alphabetically and feature sections on recognition and detection, culprit medications, assessment, management, and follow-up treatment. Concise in format and broad in scope, this reference is particularly useful for psychopharmacology beginners but serves to reinforce for all readers the importance of frequent communication with patients and their families.
