The earliest examples of Buddhist studies originating in the Western world tended to frame Buddhism as a religion similar to Abrahamic monotheisms. This involved, among other things, an emphasis on philological, doctrinal, and textual studies, as well as an assumption that the Buddha compares directly to the messianic figures central to other traditions. Starting in the late twentieth century, Buddhist studies scholars have been creatively moving outside of this rubric, and indeed outside of the familiar boundaries of the academy. This movement has allowed them to examine subjects, perspectives, and methodologies not previously engaged by the mainstream of Buddhist studies. Converging revolutionary changes in Europe, the former Soviet Union, and in southern Africa radically transformed the international political environment in which Third World countries had formulated and implemented their policies toward South Africa. These changes also focused attention on the need for democratic reforms in Sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere in the Third World. By removing apartheid's legal underpinning, the South African government made a major and largely unanticipated step toward creating a relatively egalitarian and nonracial society. Dismantling the more intractable social and economic components of a legal system of racial domination, into which South Africans have been socialized, is clearly a more herculean endeavor.Payne analyzes Third World relations with South Africa: the common and divergent interests among the countries that opposed apartheid, conflict and cooperation between the Third World and South Africa, and the implications of changes in South Africa for the Third World in general and Sub-Saharan Africa in particular. ‘Fifty Years of Flicking Football’ is a concise history of the game of - table football - ‘Subbuteo’, from its inception in 1946 to the modern day. The book will appeal to, and bring back memories, to countless boys (aged 8 to 80), worldwide, who at one time have played the game, and indeed still do. The author Richard Payne, a lifetime enthusiast, had the benefit of the personal recollections from the inventor of Subbuteo, the Late Peter Adolph, together with the memories of several famous football personalities. The book also relates the development of the game over the decades, the offshoots of Subbuteo to other sports, hints on collecting and is well illustrated with nostalgic advertisements, action shots, etc.

After a difficult youth, David Carter had become an excellent journalist for the Guardian. Whilst working full-time, he met a young woman named Susan, and they were preparing to get married. David was born with epilepsy, and as he was growing up, many people tormented him because of this condition. He had wonderful family support when he was a child and as he grew up through school and college. Eventually his life settled down, and he studied for a career in journalism. After many years of health difficulties, his dream came true, and at last everything in his life appeared calm and tranquil. One day near Easter, Davids brother, Matthew, asked him if he would like to spend a weekend with him in Cardiff, having already booked the rooms at a bed and breakfast. During their weekend, it was revealed that David had been adopted when he was just three and a half years old. David was horrified, and though he did not want to, he felt that it was his duty as an undercover journalist to find out more about his real mother. He found his mother living in a small flat in Milton Keynes, and though she did not want to speak with him, he forced his way in. There she revealed more about his real upbringing. The news horrified David even more and turned his settled life upside down, confusing him and aggravating his epilepsy. His life changed yet again when he was involved in a car crash. Some people believed hed suffered an epileptic attack at the steering wheel, but there was no evidence to prove this. He was taken to hospital seriously injured and in a coma. He remained there for several months, until eventually he slowly opened his eyes and began his recovery. Again he seemed a changed man, only wanting to live a life of peace and love with everybody. This change amazed and delighted Susan, and they made final preparations for their wedding and a new beginning.
