Now updated with a new afterword, the classic true crime thriller by journalist Steven Walker and veteran police detective Rick Reed exploring the grisly crimes of a sadistic serial killer who dismembered his victims. Joseph Weldon Brown confessed to more than a dozen murders across seven states. He was convicted and sentenced for killing a woman whose body he dismembered and scattered across three Indiana counties. In prison, he hogtied and strangled his cellmate, then asked the judge to lock him up for life because if he was released, he would continue killing. Police detective Rick Reed was on the scene when Brown led authorities to the scattered remains of Ginger Gasaway in 2000. After Brown’s arrest, he confessed to a shocking number of other heinous crimes—the torture and murders of drifters and sex workers, the cold case of a naked woman’s body found in a roadside ditch, even the murder of his own mother. Detective Reed was the one man Brown opened up to—and the only one to cut through the deceptions and lies and learn the terrible truth . . . In this newly updated edition, now-retired detective Reed reveals his personal theories and insights into one of the darkest minds he has ever encountered—and one of the most terrifying crime stories ever told . . .

A serial killer targets the cops and judges of a small Midwestern city in this mystery thriller by the acclaimed author and former homicide detective.   Detective Jack Murphy can read a crime scene like a book. When the naked, brutalized corpse of a narcotics cop is found, it’s not the body that tells him a sick killer is on the loose, but the monkey figurine—of the “see no evil” kind—shoved down the victim’s throat. It’s not a clue. It’s a message.   When a high-profile judge is set on fire, another figurine left behind. Murphy has a guess what’s next. But even he’s in for a grim surprise. Because the torture-killer taking out the defenders of law and order across Evansville, Indiana, isn’t the only one with secrets. The victims might have a few, too . . .

An Indiana detective is hunting a serial killer acting on a perverse sense of patriotism in this crime thriller by the acclaimed author and veteran cop.   The headlines scream the ghastly news of an abandoned truck filled with murdered immigrants. Detective Jack Murphy and his partner Liddell “Bigfoot” Blanchard are on the case. They’ve got a lone survivor, rumors of a witness, and the feds getting in their way.   Jack’s gut tells him there’s a connection with a local killing—and the bloodshed is far from over. He’s going up against a butcher who commits the unspeakable in the name of protecting America. Some say the worst crime is to look the other way. Jack Murphy only looks for justice . . .

Cop vs. Killer  Detective Jack Murphy never met a cold case he couldn’t crack. This one’s been on ice for 37 years. The prime suspect in a decades-old unsolved murder is about to be named Evansville’s next Chief of Police. The Mayor wants the top cop’s name cleared—and that’s why Murphy and his partner, Liddell Blanchard, are ordered to re-open the investigation. But when the victim’s sister and mother are targeted for violence, troubling new questions arise. Is this the work of the same killer, or is someone else playing a deadly game? The answers lie buried in the past. But no one digs through the dirt like Jack Murphy . . .  Praise for Rick Reed and his novels “Reed gives the reader a story worth every minute and every penny spent.”—Book Reporter “Rick Reed knows the dark side as only a real-life cop can, and his writing crackles with authenticity.” —Shane Gericke “A jaw-dropping thriller.”—Gregg Olsen “Reed thrusts his story forward to bring us along on a ride we won’t soon forget!”—Suspense Magazine

In rural Indiana, the underground mines that once held coal and iron ore have become killing grounds. In two counties, five corpses have been discovered. Their deaths appear accidental, from drowning or suffocating in flooded and abandoned mines. But local authorities, including Chief Shaunda Lynch, have uncovered evidence suggesting they’ve all been murdered.   Assigned to the case as Federal Agents, Detectives Jack Murphy and Liddell Blanchard take charge of the investigation. Shaunda’s proven herself more than capable of policing her jurisdiction and resents the intrusion of male authority figures. As Jack digs deep into the case, he discovers the victims have checkered pasts. But no matter who believes the killings are justified, someone still has to pay for the crime . . .  Praise for Rick Reed and his novels  "Rick Reed’s books have an edge that only a man in law enforcement, working in the field, can bring to life." - Tierney James, author of the Enigma series  “Reed thrusts his story forward to bring us along on a ride we won’t soon forget!”—Suspense Magazine  “Reed gives the reader a genre story worth every minute and every penny spent.”—Book Reporter  “A jaw-dropping thriller.”—Gregg Olsen     Visit us at www.kensingtonbooks.com

"Reed Writes As Only A Cop Can…. Impressive And Dramatic." --Nelson DeMilleKilling Has Become A Team Sport. To Win The Game, Detective Jack Murphy Will Have To Identify All The Players--Whatever The Cost. The body parts of a young woman have shown up in the town landfill and homicide detective Jack Murphy is on the case. Nina Parsons was not only a deputy prosecutor, but the rumored lover of the man Jack''s ex-wife is about to marry: the Chief Deputy Prosecutor. Now Jack must battle not just his own fears and demons, but the political interference that ensues as he fights with all he has to expose the greed and power that can drive even good men to commit evil acts. “Reed writes as only a cop can.” —Nelson DeMilleDETECTIVE JACK MURPHY IS BACK—on the trail of a criminal mastermind who kills for profit and tortures for pleasure.   In Jack Murphy’s experience, the killers who blend in are the hardest to catch. But none are as elusive—or efficient—as Mr. Smith. A man of average height, weight and build, Mr. Smith is as ordinary as his name. Which makes it easy for him to get close to his targets. To kill without conscience. To use every weapon at his disposal to raise the stakes in a global game of terror and death. Mr. Smith is no ordinary killer. But Jack Murphy is no ordinary cop . . .   Praise for Rick Reed and his novels   “As authentic and scary as crime thrillers get.”—Nelson DeMille  “Det. When his partner is framed for murder, an Indiana detective is drawn into Louisiana’s criminal underworld in this “authentic and scary” crime series (Nelson DeMille on The Cruelest Cut).   Jack Murphy knows a setup when he sees one. Proving it makes his day. Especially when it involves his own partner. Lured into a trap, Evansville PD Liddell “Bigfoot” Blanchard is accused of murdering a cop who was investigating a shadowy voodoo cult. Now Jack is out to dispel the deception and put the real killer behind bars.   Justice is murky enough in the swamplands of Louisiana, but when a purported descendent of Marie Leveaux menaces a murder investigation, the gumbo really hits the fan. Corruption comes with the territory. But there are darker forces at play—and only Murphy can see the light . . .

The exciting novel that launched the Jack Murphy thriller series!   “As authentic and scary as thrillers get.” –Nelson DeMille   When a killer plays mind games with a cop, THERE ARE NO RULES.   The first victim is attacked in her home. Tied to her bed. Forced to watch every unspeakable act of cruelty—but unable to scream. The second murder is even more twisted. Signed, sealed, and delivered with a message for the police, stuffed in the victim’s throat. A fractured nursery rhyme that ends with a warning: “There will be more.” For detective Jack Murphy, it’s more than a threat. It’s a personal invitation to play. And no one plays rougher than Jack. Especially when the killer’s pawns are the people he loves…   "Put this on your must-read list."--John Lutz   “A jaw-dropping thriller.”--Gregg Olsen   “A tornado of drama.”—Shane Gericke

"Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching." --1 Timothy 4:16· Understand the greatest threats to your preaching· Identify common tests of your character· Learn gospel-based habits that guard your heartPreachers cannot separate themselves from their preaching. Every time a preacher proclaims the word, something of themselves is also delivered to the congregation--for better or worse. In The Heart of the Preacher, Rick Reed draws from over three decades of preaching experience to emphasize how preachers must prepare their hearts before they are ready to preach. Sermon preparation involves more than mere technical steps. Preachers are people. Exhaustion, discouragement, insecurity, and more threaten a preacher's character, and thus their preaching. Reed equips pastors with practices and habits to face these threats. Preachers must guard their lives so that their teaching will be accompanied by the fruit of the Spirit.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 17th International System Design Language Forum, SDL 2015, held in Berlin, Germany, in October 2015.The 15 full papers and 4 short papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 26 submissions. They are organized in topical sections named: smart cities and distributed systems; specification and description language; domain specific languages; goal modeling; use-case modeling; and model-based testing.

This volume contains the papers presented at the 12th SDL Forum, Grimstad, Norway. The SDL Forum was ?rst held in 1982, and then every two years from 1985. Initially the Forum was concerned only with the Speci?cation and Description Language that was ?rst standardized in the 1976 Orange Book of the Inter- tional Telecommunication Union (ITU). Since then, many developments took place and the language has undergone several changes. However, the main underlying paradigm has survived, and it is the reason for the success of the Speci?cation and Description Language in many projects. This paradigm is based on the following important principles of distributed - plications: Communication: large systems tend to be described using smaller parts that communicate with each other; State: the systems are described on the basis of an explicit notion of state; State change: the behavior of the system is described in terms of (local) changes of the state. The original language is not the only representative for this kind of paradigm, so the scope of the SDL Forum was extended quite soon after the ?rst few events to also include other ITU standardized languages of the same family, such as MSC, ASN.1 and TTCN. This led to the current scope of System Design Languages coveringallstagesofthedevelopmentprocessincludinginparticularSDL,MSC, UML, ASN.1, eODL, TTCN, and URN. The focus is clearly on the advantages to users, and how to get from these languages the same advantage given by the ITU Speci?cation and Description Language: code generation from high-level speci?cations.

This volume contains the papers presented at the 11th SDL Forum, Stuttgart. As well as the papers, the 11th SDL Forum also hosted a system design competition sponsored by Solinet with a cash prize for the “best” design. This follows a similar competition at the SAM 2002 workshop (papers published in LNCS 2599). The winning entry from SAM 2002 is described in the last paper in this volume. The SDL Forum was ?rst held in 1982, and then every two years from 1985. Initially the Forum was concerned only with the Speci?cation and Descr- tion Language ?rst standardized in the 1976 Orange Book of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). From the start this graphical CEFSM (communicating extended ?nite state machines) notation was used both to describe the implementation of systems and to specify systems (especially protocol systems in standards). In the early days both types of description were quite informal, though speci?cations were certainly more formal than the main alternative: natural languagewith some ad hoc ?gures. Implementations were usually written in assembly language, which is at too low a level to reason well about the interaction between communic- ing agents within a system. In this case the notation provided an intermediate description that gave an overview of how the implementation worked, and often the actual logical development was done at the graphical level with hand coding of that description.
