Applied Ethics for Program Evaluation achieves its goal of providing evaluation practitioners with a theory of ethical decision making that they can realistically apply in their work. . . . It will serve as an excellent supplementary text in introductory or advanced courses in evaluation research. The book will appeal to practicing evaluators because it addresses issues of immediate concern to them, offers realistic guidance for how to respond to those issues, and discusses philosophical matters in a way that is accessible to the nonphilosopher. . . . Applied Ethics for Program Evaluation is an excellent resource for readers to use in conjunction with the Joint Committee Standards, the ERS Standards, and/or the AEA's Guiding Principles for Evaluators. --Michael Morris, Department of Psychology, University of New Haven "This book really does a fine job of providing a theoretical model of ethical decision making for practitioners. I particularly like the way they move from theory to principles to rules." --Katherine Ryan, Instructional Resources, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign From the moment the evaluator begins the consultation process to the time when the evaluator is responding to the last reaction to the evaluation report, ethical choices are being made on matters large and small. How can an evaluator deal with ethical value issues in a way that does not smack of "ethical imperialism" or a knee-jerk prescriptive stance? Applied Ethics for Program Evaluation is aimed at sensitizing evaluators, potential clients, and stakeholders in program evaluation. In a thoughtful examination, the book explores a set of principles that can serve as foundational guidelines for making ethical decisions. Through the use of vignettes, the authors provide the readers with ethical dilemmas and questions to stimulate thinking about the positive and negative consequences of each option. Following an introduction to ethical theories and principles, the authors propose a framework (based on Kitchner's five ethical principles) that can be used in weighing these options. The book concludes by providing valuable suggestions on how evaluators can make informed ethical decisions in their own evaluation practice. Applied Ethics for Program Evaluation is recommended as a supplement in evaluation, research methods, education, management, psychology, sociology, and nursing research courses. This unique text will also appeal to professionals with an evaluation practice.

This definitive edition, the first since 1974, presents all the poetry of Samuel Johnson (1709–1784), including his play, Irene, with detailed, wide-ranging commentary. It has been expertly edited with attention to the extant manuscripts and all relevant printings. The volume includes the entirety of Johnson’s verse in all its generic diversity: including satire, ode, elegy, verse drama, and verse prayer. The poems are presented in their original spelling and punctuation with extensive commentary on their literary background—biblical, classical, and modern—as well as careful explanation of unusual words, allusions to historical figures, and references to contemporary events that appear in the poems. Proceeding chronologically, this edition also situates Johnson’s verse in the context of his life from his early days in Lichfield to his career as an author in London.Unlike all earlier editions, the present offering provides full translations of all the Latin and Greek poems on which Johnson based so much of his English verse. Correspondingly, it provides the English poems which some of his Latin verse translates. Neither in the presentation of the verse nor in the commentary does this edition assume a command of foreign languages: it aims to be useful for all students of Samuel Johnson’s poetry.

The first International Conference on the Biology of Deer Production was held at Dunedin, New Zealand in 1983. That meeting provided, for the first time, a forum for those with interests in either wild deer management or farmed deer production to come together. Scientists, wild deer managers, domestic deer farmers, veterinarians, venison and antler product producers, and others were able to discuss common problems and to share their knowledge and experience. The relationships formed at that meeting, and the information amassed in the resulting Proceedings, sparked new endeavors in cervid research, management, and production. A great deal has taken place in the world of deer biology since 1983. Wild deer populations, although ever increasing in many areas of the world, face new hazards of habitat loss, environmental contamination, and overexploitation. Some species are closer to extinction than ever. Game managers often face political as well as biological challenges. Many more deer are now on farms, leading to greater concerns about disease control and increased needs for husbandry information. Researchers have accumulated considerable new in formation, some of it in areas such as biochemical genetics, not discussed in 1983.

Robert Brown helps us see that a 'thermally comfortable microclimate' is the very foundation of well-designed and well-used outdoor places. Brown argues that as we try to minimise human-induced changes to the climate and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels - as some areas become warmer, some cooler, some wetter, and some drier, and all become more expensive to regulate - good microclimate design will become increasingly important. In the future, according to Brown, all designers will need to understand climatic issues and be able to respond to their challenges. Brown describes the effects that climate has on outdoor spaces - using vivid illustrations and examples - while providing practical tools that can be used in everyday design practice. The heart of the book is Brown's own design process, as he provides useful guidelines that lead designers clearly through the complexity of climate data, precedents, site assessment, microclimate modification, communication, design, and evaluation. Brown strikes an ideal balance of technical information, anecdotes, examples, and illustrations to keep the book engaging and accessible. His emphasis throughout is on creating microclimates that attend to the comfort, health, and well-being of people, animals, and plants. "Design with Microclimate" is a vital resource for students and practitioners of landscape architecture, architecture, planning, and urban design.
