In seventeenth-century England, patriarchalist thinking shaped English ideas not only about the family but also about society and the state. Many thinkers argued that the state should be seen as a family, and that the king held the powers of a father over his subjects. The classic texts of patriarchal political thinking were written by Sir Robert Filmer (1588-1653), one of the most acute defenders of absolute monarchy. In addition to presenting his own patriarchalist theory, Filmer's works contain incisive attacks on democratic thinking and on the notion that political obligation stems from a contract between ruler and ruled. His political works are here edited from the original manuscript and printed sources, with an introduction which locates Filmer's ideas in their historical and ideological contexts. These texts - to which John Locke replied in his influential Two Treatises of Government - provide highly important documents for the understanding of political and social ideas at a decisive stage in the development of English attitudes.

Robert Filmer's prime assumption is that the Bible contains the entire truth about the nature of the world and the nature of society. Along with details of recorded history from the beginning to the death of the Apostles, the Bible also includes the laws that would govern history from that time to the end of the world. This central assumption was shared by nearly every member of Tory Christendom in England in the seventeenth century. In the same way, Filmer holds that it is impossible for a people to escape political anarchy once it is assumed that all individuals are independent and equal. It is also impossible for people to escape from collectivism, if it is granted that everyone has a moral right to an equal share of the gifts of nature. In explaining why Filmer remains both important and influential, Laslett argues that his reputation owes a great deal to the fortuitous circumstances of the time at which his works were resuscitated. His work passed almost unnoticed when it was first issued. Only the position of the Tory party gave his views prominence. The value of Patriarcha as a historical document consists primarily in its revelation of the strength and persistence in European culture of the patriarchal attitude to political problems. The opening essay by Laslett offers a brilliant analysis of late seventeenth-century English politics and philosophy. Long unavailable, this is a masterpiece of religious conservatism that still registers in debates at present.

Robert Filmer is the greatest proponent of the divine right of kings the English-speaking world has ever produced. Writing in defence of the Stuart kings against an increasingly strident parliament, he shows by arguments from reason, history, and scripture that the sovereign is necessarily a king, whether in name or not.
But Filmer''s importance is much broader than the question of sovereignty. His patriarchalism shows that legitimacy can only derive from earlier legitimacy and ultimately from the divine, offering a powerful counter-revolutionary philosophical framework with fatal implications for democracy and
constitutionalism. Small wonder that liberals felt it necessary to respond to him, and in the introduction to this volume, it is shown that his most famous critic-John Locke-never successfully refuted him.

In »Patriarcha«, das zwischen 1628 und 1631 verfasst wurde und zu Lebzeiten des Autors nur als Manuskript zirkulierte, legt der englische politische Theoretiker Robert Filmer unter Bezug auf die Heilige Schrift die Grundlagen des politischen Patriarchalismus. Im Zentrum steht die Behauptung, dass die »Untertänigkeit der Kinder durch Verordnung Gottes selbst die Quelle aller königlichen Autorität ist«. Die Macht des Vaters wird nicht nur analog zur Macht des Königs gedacht, sondern Filmer gibt dieser Rechtfertigung königlicher Herrschaft einen neuen Dreh, indem er Adam als den einzigen und ursprünglichen Vater der Menschheit auffasst und so von ihm in genealogischer Übertragung alle Herrschaft ableitet. Einer anderen Begründung staatlicher Souveränität bedarf es laut Filmer nicht nur nicht, sie ist auch gar nicht denkbar. Damit wendet er sich ausdrücklich gegen die Idee eines Gesellschaftsvertrags, wie sie in unterschiedlicher Nuancierung von Suárez, Grotius und Hobbes vertreten wurde.Filmers Schrift entstand in einer Zeit politischer Konflikte zwischen Parlament und Krone, die in den englischen Bürgerkrieg und die Hinrichtung Charles I. mündeten. Seine politische Lehre entwickelte er in Reaktion auf die parlamentarischen Forderungen gegenüber der Krone, die sich im Namen der Freiheit auch auf die Naturrechtslehren beriefen. Für Filmer hingegen sind die Menschen niemals in einem Zustand natürlicher Freiheit. Er hielt das Pathos der natürlichen Freiheit für trügerisch und politisch gefährlich.Auch wenn Filmers Überzeugungen zeitgebunden und für den heutigen politischen Diskurs obsolet sind, sind sie ein bedeutender Meilenstein der politischen Ideengeschichte und waren von erstaunlicher Wirkmächtigkeit. Mit Filmer wird ein origineller Denker sichtbar, der in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit den politischen Ideen seiner Zeit einen erheblichen Einfluss im politischen Meinungsstreit ausübte.
