This textbook was conceived and written under the authors’ conviction that the feature of Greek grammar that lends itself most readily to understanding and discussion is syntax, especially the syntax of the verb and that such understanding has been unnecessarily complicated by the traditional use of a terminology derived more from the study of the Latin verb than the Greek. The principal feature of the Greek verb is no longer presented as that of “tense,” a term that conflates and confuses questions of the time of an action relative to the act of speaking with ways of representing an action in itself. Rather, emphasis is placed on the latter feature, the aspect of a verb, both as a means of organizing the many forms that the verb can take and as a means of making comparatively simple sense of the multiplicity of syntactical rules that govern its use.Volume One features twenty Lessons presenting basic Greek Grammar in a manner facilitating the early introduction of substantial and philosophically rich passages from Heraclitus Aeschylus, Xenophon, Aristotle, Euclid and especially Plato, each containing vocabulary, discussion and exercises to aid in retention and reinforcement. Volume Two contains extended readings, with grammatical and vocabulary notes, from Plato and Aristotle, including the complete dialogue Meno, as well as Appendices and comprehensive Vocabulary lists.The two most distinctive Lessons in the text occur close to the beginning. Like many genetic engineers, I have recently been receiving the atten­ tion of various venture capital companies, international drug houses and Members of Parliament. I will not discuss which of these approaches are most welcome, but it did cause me to consider the speed of advance in genetic engineering, and the implications of this rapid growth. There were few who anticipated it - only five years ago, most scientists thought applications would come at the end of the century, yet we see products such as insulin and interferon already available for clinical testing. In Europe in general and Britain in particular, this explosive growth in our own field has coincided with a general industrial depression and a marked reduction in funding for biomedical research. The brain drain from Britain is a serious matter, for we are losing the best of our younger scientists, on whom we would rely to train the next generation of molecular biologists. These volumes have come from British labs (mostly because I happen to be based in London, and my contacts and friends are here), and I feel that the quality of the con­ tributions also shows that our current research is of a high standard.

Genetic Engineering 1 is the first of a series containing reviews of particular topics using genetic recombinant DNA techniques. This three-chapter volume describes the construction of libraries of expressed gene sequences, the use of gene-specific probes in antenatal diagnosis, and the expression of isolated genes in cellular and cell-free systems. Chapter 1 presents particular series of steps for the preparation and screening of cDNA clone bank. Chapter 2 discusses the advances in DNA analysis techniques that have profound effects upon the understanding of some genetic diseases and on the ability to reduce the incidence of these diseases by antenatal diagnosis and therapeutic abortion. Chapter 3 considers the experimental systems for studying the expression of isolated eukaryotic genes, concentrating on microinjection into Xenopus oocytes and incubation in cell-free systems in vitro. This book is of great value to genetic engineers, geneticists, and biochemists.
