Emergency medicine attendings who wish to hone their teaching skills can find a number of books on educational strategies written by physicians from other disciplines. However, until the publication of the first edition of this book, they did not have access to a text written by emergency medicine physicians on methods of teaching that are directly applicable to teaching EM. This book was compiled to meet that need.Following the introductory section, which provides important background information, the book’s contents are organized into 4 sections that correspond to the core needs and interests of EM educators: Section 2 focuses on practical and ethical considerations of teaching in the ED; Section 3 provides strategies for teaching specific groups of learners; Section 4 looks at the skills that are characteristic of the best EM educators; and Section 5 looks indepthly at specific teaching techniques and strategies. Now more than ever this book addresses the needs of physician educators from all over the world. New chapters discuss lecturing to an international audience; using simulation as a teaching tool; how to make journal club work for you, and other topics that are of broad interest to medical educators in this field.  In general, each chapter has been updated and reviewed to make sure the content was something that emergency physician educators could use in any country. The chapter contributors are widely regarded as leaders in the field of emergency medicine education and faculty development. Authors were given free rein to develop their chapters and write in their own style. They were asked to present their personal views on how to successfully teach the art of emergency medicine, rather than review evidence-based guidelines regarding medical education. As a result, most of the chapters have few references. This first-person approach to a multi-authored textbook yields a compilation that varies in style from chapter to chapter and exposes the reader to a variety of communication techniques.

Cells and Tissues: An Introduction to Histology and Cell Biology begins by explaining why histology should be studied. Some chapters follow on the techniques for studying cells and tissues, the anatomy of the cell, the epithelia, the connective tissues, and the blood. This book also covers topics on the immunity against foreign material; contractility, specifically at how it is brought about and at how the system changes in a stationary cell; and harnessing of contraction to produce movement. This text also looks into the communication systems within cells, the life and death of cells, and the histological sections of small intestine. The responses of the body to injury in the processes of inflammation and repair are also explored. This book will be useful to students starting in histology, though it does assume some elementary knowledge of biochemistry and of the structure of the mammalian body.

This book explores music/sound-image relationships in non-mainstream screen repertoire from the earliest examples of experimental audiovisuality to the most recent forms of expanded and digital technology. It challenges presumptions of visual primacy in experimental cinema and rethinks screen music discourse in light of the aesthetics of non-commercial imperatives. Several themes run through the book, connecting with and significantly enlarging upon current critical discourse surrounding realism and audibility in the fiction film, the role of music in mainstream cinema, and the audiovisual strategies of experimental film. The contributors investigate repertoires and artists from Europe and the USA through the critical lenses of synchronicity and animated sound, interrelations of experimentation in image and sound, audiovisual synchresis and dissonance, experimental soundscape traditions, found-footage film, re-mediation of pre-existent music and sound, popular and queer sound cultures, and a diversity of radical technological, aesthetic, tropes in film media traversing the work of early pioneers such as Walther Ruttmann and Len Lye, through the mid-century innovations of Norman McLaren, Stan Brakhage, Lis Rhodes, Kenneth Anger, Andy Warhol, and studio collectives in Poland, to latter-day experimentalists John Smith and Bill Morrison, as well as the contemporary practices of Vjing.

Classical Traditions in Modern Fantasy is the first collection of essays in English focusing on how fantasy draws deeply on ancient Greek and Roman mythology, philosophy, literature, history, art, and cult practice. Presenting fifteen all-new essays intended for both scholars and other readers of fantasy, this volume explores many of the most significant examples of the modern genre-including the works of H. P. Lovecraft, J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones series, and more-in relation to important ancient texts such as Aeschylus' Oresteia, Aristotle's Poetics, Virgil's Aeneid, and Apuleius' The Golden Ass. These varied studies raise fascinating questions about genre, literary and artistic histories, and the suspension of disbelief required not only of readers of fantasy but also of students of antiquity. Ranging from harpies to hobbits, from Cyclopes to Cthulhu, and all manner of monster and myth in-between, this comparative study of Classics and fantasy reveals deep similarities between ancient and modern ways of imagining the world. Although antiquity and the present day differ in many ways, at its base, ancient literature resonates deeply with modern fantasy's image of worlds in flux and bodies in motion.

Boasting a rich, complex history rooted in Celtic and Christian ritual, Halloween has evolved from ethnic celebration to a blend of street festival, fright night, and vast commercial enterprise. In this colourful history, Nicholas Rogers takes a lively, entertaining look at the cultural origins and development of one of the most popular holidays of the year.Drawing on a fascinating array of sources, from classical history to Hollywood films, Rogers traces Halloween as it emerged from the Celtic festival of Samhain (summer's end), picked up elements of the Christian Hallowtide (All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day), arrived in North America as an Irish and Scottish festival, and evolved into an unofficial but large-scale holiday by the early 20th century. He examines the 1970s and '80s phenomena of Halloween sadism (razor blades in apples) and inner-city violence (arson in Detroit), as well as the immense influence of the horror film genre on the reinvention of Halloween as a terror-fest. Throughout his vivid account, Rogers shows how Halloween remains, at its core, a night of inversion, when social norms are turned upside down, and a temporary freedom of expression reigns supreme. He examines how this very license has prompted censure by the religious Right, occasional outrage from law enforcement officials, and appropriation by Left-leaning political groups.Engagingly written and based on extensive research, Halloween is the definitive history of the most bewitching day of the year, illuminating the intricate history and shifting cultural forces behind this enduring trick-or-treat holiday.

This is a carefully researched and illuminating study of siege warfare in the twelfth century. The siege was an integral part of medieval military experience, and was particularly significant in the Mediterranean region. R. Rogers explores siege warfare and the role it played in the First Crusade and the establishment of the Crusader States, in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, and in the seaborne expeditions of the Italian maritime states. Dr Rogers sets out to discover how it was that crusading forces handicapped by rudimentary organization and logistical support were able to conduct some of the most dramatic siege operations of the pre-gunpowder period. He traces the development and diffusion of techniques; and analyses the experience of siege warfare in every aspect, from the question of supplies of component parts for siege engines to the often complex political situations of besieger and besieged. This is a book which contributes not only to the military history of the twelfth century but also to its political and cultural history.

Three hundred years after his major publications, John Locke remains one of the most potent philosophical influences in the world today. His epistemology has become embedded in our everyday presumptions about the world, and his political theory lies at the heart of the liberal democratic state. This collection by a distinguished international group of scholars looks both at core areas of Locke's philosophy and political theory and at areas not usually discussed--the links between Locke's philosophy and his religious and political thought, the effects and implications of Locke's works in the world at the time, and the manifestation of those effects in the present day. Drawing on material not available until recently--on both the modern texts of the Clarendon Edition of Locke's works and on unpublished manuscripts--Locke's Philosophy: Content and Context is the first original collection of Locke's scholarship for some years. It provides important new insight into his thought and is likely to be the starting point for much future work.Contributors: Peter Alexander, Michael Ayers, Martha Brandt Bolton, Vere Chappell, Ian Harris, Paschalis M. Kitromilides, Michael Losonsky, John Milton, G. A. J. Rogers, Janina Rosicka, James Tully

For all its concern with change in the present and future, science fiction is deeply rooted in the past and, surprisingly, engages especially deeply with the ancient world. Indeed, both as an area in which the meaning of "classics" is actively transformed and as an open-ended set of texts whose own 'classic' status is a matter of ongoing debate, science fiction reveals much about the roles played by ancient classics in modern times. Classical Traditions in Science Fiction is the first collection dedicated to the rich study of science fiction's classical heritage, offering a much-needed mapping of its cultural and intellectual terrain. This volume discusses a wide variety of representative examples from both classical antiquity and the past four hundred years of science fiction, beginning with science fiction's "rosy-fingered dawn" and moving toward the other-worldly literature of the present day. As it makes its way through the eras of science fiction, Classical Traditions in Science Fiction exposes the many levels on which science fiction engages the ideas of the ancient world, from minute matters of language and structure to the larger thematic and philosophical concerns.

Smoking and tobacco have received much attention in the literature throughout this century, particularly in the last 30 years. The causal role of smoking in a large number of fatal diseases has been established. Concern about the ill effects of smoking has led to anti-smoking campaigns revolving around primary prevention and smoking cessation. This book focuses on the literature directed to those who cannot or will not quit smoking and offers an informed risk reduction approach aimed directly at the chronic smoker. A large number of smoking interventions are represented as well as the characteristics of smokers and the outcome of the respective interventions. The importance of continued research on controlled or reduced smoking as opposed to that of smoking cessation is outlined and methodological flaws are offered to alert future researchers. This literature will be an invaluable resource to health professionals, therapists, and others involved in the issue of health and the hazards of continued smoking.

This book focuses on the interaction between business, the environment, government regulators and technology, describing the greening of industry in the US, Japan and the EU and the way in which environmental management is being applied.

Synthetic Methods in Step-Growth Polymers provides a concise source of information on synthetic techniques, purification, and characterization methods for step-growth polymers and also addresses future synthetic trends.

Store Location and Store Assessment Research Edited by R. L. DaviesUniversity of Newcastle, UK and D. S. Rogers D. S. R. MarketingSystems Inc., Illinois, USA An invaluable book to students andpractitioners in marketing and retailing. This book looks at storelocation and store assessment research on both sides of theAtlantic from an academic and a practical retailing point of view, and in doing so attempts to fill a gap in an area which has beenhitherto poorly documented. It is also an area in which theory andpractice have rarely interrelated. This book endeavours to marrythe academic contributions that have been made from a largelytheoretical perspective to a series of business experiences thathave been conducted in practice. In an age of relative storesaturation and an abundance of shopping centres accurate storelocation research and store location assessment is not onlyadvisable but essential. In recent years a coalescence of needs anda sharing of ideas has transpired between the USA and the UK andhas provided a rationale for this collection of Anglo-Americanessays which give a balanced view of the theory and the practicethat make up the subject. Sex education, like other controversial issues, has generated a great deal of polemical writing, much of which is likely to leave the interested reader both confused and factually under-informed. In this 1974 publication, Sex Education, Rex Rogers adopted a fresh and helpful approach - a book of readings with a distinct empirical flavour. Deliberate emphasis is given to studies that provide data on the utilisation, justification and effects of sex education in the belief that such knowledge is essential for the intelligent approach to this subject. Although written with the needs of those researching or teaching in the field of sex education particularly in mind, this collection contains little beyond the grasp of the non-specialist.

A solid history of a relatively unknown area of Florida. The rich detail of destruction by hurricanes and fires; the building of lighthouses, schools, banks, and bars; and the stories of the people who were associated with those events and facilities makes lively reading. Rogers writes with vivacity and a quick wit. His book will be welcomed not only by Florida historians interested in state and local history but also by a much wider reading public."" - Journal of American History

This comprehensive survey will be useful for anyone who seriously wants to learn more about the current therapeutic status of biofeedback-therapists, physicians considering a referral, well-educated prospective patients, teachers, students, and research workers. But readers with different needs should use it in different ways. For a quick overview of a large field, one should tum to the Introduction and Summary and Conclusions sections. The reader interested in a specific disease should look for the proper section in the Table of Contents and then tum to the overall summary at the end of that section and also the briefer summaries that are given in the last paragraph of many subsections, whenever sufficient data are available. The reader who wants more information should read the entire chapter. The serious student or research worker, for whom the book will be most valuable, will want to read more of the main volume and at least to sample the Appendix to see the kinds of information that can be mined from it. When patients are satisfied with a new treatment and seem to be improved by it, why bother with any additional evaluation? The reason is that history has shown over and over again that new forms of treatment initially can be used enthusiastically for many conditions with apparent success, only to have the pendulum swing in the opposite direction from overenthusiasm to com plete disillusionment.
